Large scale poultry importers say a new quarantine centre to be built in Melbourne's north could lead to an increase in exotic diseases such as bird flu.The $300 million centre will be built at Mickleham replacing five outdated quarantine centres across four states.Large poultry companies say the project could compromise Australia's biosecurity leading to disease outbreaks and even encouraging smuggling.Daniel Gowland and his family are based at Bungendore, near Canberra, and have been importing and breeding birds for more than 30 years.

Poultry Product Prices May Gain on Festival Demand

CII moots public-private model for banana cold chains in TN

COIMBATORE, DEC. 15: 
Lack of cold storage infrastructure is proving to be a costly miss for the State. The Confederation of Indian Industry has estimated the loss of opportunity at over Rs 2,700 crore.

Speaking at the second edition of Tamil Nadu Banana Festival 2013, Ravichandran Purushothaman, Chairman, CII Tamil Nadu Banana Festival 2013 and President, Danfoss Industries (India) said that despite being the sixth largest producer of banana in the world, Tamil Nadu is losing over Rs 2,700 crore due to lack of cold storage infrastructure.

Bt cotton attracting youngsters to farming in India

NEW DELHI: Contrary to the perception that youngsters are abandoning farming, Bt cotton technology has attracted young farmers to cotton farming in the country, a survey byIndian Society for Cotton Improvement (ISCI) said.
The survey confirmed wide-spread planting of Bt cotton, occupying 95 per cent of total cotton area, in the rainfed, semi-irrigated and irrigated areas, which has taken place during the last 8-9 years in Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh and 6-7 years in Punjab, ISCI said in a release.

Chinese nationals charged with stealing corn technology

A Chinese national has been accused with "theft of trade secrets" after a two-year investigation into his work in the U.S. uncovered his plans to take seed and seed-trait technology from DuPont Pioneer and Monsanto to China unlawfully.

Mo Hailong, or "Robert Mo," director of international business for the Beijing Dabeinong Technology Group Company, became a lawful permanent resident of the U.S. about two years ago, during which time he's been accused of conspiring to engage in "criminal activity to steal the intellectual property of U.S.-based seed manufacturing companies and transporting that stolen intellectual property back to China for the benefit of their China-based seed company," according to a court document from the U.S. District Court for the southern district of Iowa, where he was arraigned on Thursday.
