Poultry Feed Prices Rise on Costlier Inputs

INDIA - Prices of poultry feed increased this week following an uptrend in prices of key ingredients in the last few days.


Higher input costs led feed prices upwards, trade expert Aditya Mishra told The Hindu Business Line. Dearer soybean meal, mainly pushed feed prices up, he said. Prices of feed products have increased by INR25-75 for a 50-kg bag.


Traders expect that if soyameal continues to rally, feed prices may increase further in the coming days. In the physical market, soyameal went up by INR1,400 to INR38,000 a tonne, while bajra dropped by INR1,200 and sold at INR13,000 a quintal.

Sweet corn –A promising crop for Kerala farmers

Sweet corn cultivation is not very demanding and requires very little attention from the grower except during the harvesting stage. Being a short duration crop, it takes three months to mature for harvesting and needing to be weeded just once during this period, it can easily fit into any sequential cropping system.


For the first time in the state, Regional Agricultural Research Station (RARS), Kumarakom, Kerala Agricultural University, have successfully initiated cultivation of sweet corn in its farm.

The outcome of the research proved that a net profit of Rs. 18,700 is achievable within a span of 90 days. The farmers who took up the cultivation recently, found twin advantages: good yield and post-harvest fodder to cattle. Sovereign seeds showcase unique biodiversity

Farmers from 17 States have arrived here with 2300 seed varieties they have conserved through generations to put them on display at the National Seeds Festival that opened here on Saturday.


The seeds of various crops, vegetables, fruits, tubers, and millets developed by the farmers proclaim the unique biodiversity of the country and back their demand to be treated on a par with agriculture researchers for minimum income security.


The farmers announced the formation of a National Seed Savers Forum to strengthen conservation and breeding. They plan to impress upon the government the need to promote diversity conservation and prevent bio-piracy and corporate monopolisation.

Ukraine pain is India’s gain

New Delhi, March 9: Wheat exports from the country have increased after the political crisis in Ukraine. Prices, too, have shot up — the grain is now fetching $275 a tonne in the international market even as earlier efforts to sell it at lower prices had failed.

India is saddled with a huge stock of 24 million tonnes of wheat against the domestic requirement of 11.2 million tonnes. It had offered around 2 million tonnes for export in August to empty its overflowing granaries and earn foreign exchange. However, it could find few buyers even at $260 a tonne.

With the conflict deepening in Ukraine, one of the world’s biggest exporters of wheat, global prices have started moving up.

The east European nation exports around 18 million tonnes annually.

Global commodity giants feel Ukraine’s sales will fall drastically with trade and commerce being held up by the ongoing revolution followed by a dispute over its coastal territories with Russia.

Crop over 6.72 lakh ha damaged in Maharashtra

AURANGABAD: Unseasonal rain accompanied by hailstorm in central parts of Maharashtra has claimed four more lives in day and more than 50% crops on 6.72 lakh hectares of agricultural land across the state has been damaged.The death toll due to the heavy rain and lightning has climbed to 12, including one death reported from Hingoli district. The farmers from Varud Chakrapan village in Sengaon taluka in Hingoli district, who was returning home from his farm, came in contact with an electric wire and was electrocuted.State agriculture commissioner Umakant Dangat said that over 6.72 lakh hectares of agricultural land across 28 districts in the state has been affected due to unseasonal rainfall and hailstorms. "Over 50, 000 hectares of fruit crops and food crops on 6.20 lakh hectares has been destroyed," he said.
