New cost saving LED light for poultry houses

Energy is a major cost factor in poultry production and research has shown that LED lighting is a very effective alternative for traditional lighting sources. Several tests in broiler houses have shown that broilers are performing well and investment is affordable and rentable within a short period of time.

Therefore, Hato has created the new and innovative Pulsa LED light, specially designed for main lighting solutions in poultry houses. The shape of this lamp, combined with the intelligent LED clustering and strong material makes it a perfect solution for broiler houses.

This dimmable 10W LED unit works on low safety voltage of 48VDC. The manufacturers state that another advantage of the Pulsa LED light is the cheap installation and its easy "Plug & Play" connection which needs no certified electrician.

Historic agriculture buildings benefit from preservation grants

MONTPELIER, Vt.— The Vermont Division for Historic Preservation and the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation recently awarded matching grants totaling $282,786 to help restore and maintain historically and architecturally significant agricultural buildings.

“Now in its 22nd year, this grant program is intensely competitive and has successfully elevated the profile of agricultural-based preservation,” said Laura V. Trieschmann, Vermont state historic preservation officer. “Because this is a matching grant program, we believe the commitment the grant recipients demonstrate to preserving our state’s historic agricultural resources for current and future generations deserves recognition and applause.”

More than 35 applications were received, with selected grant projects ranging from roof replacements, to structural and frame repairs, window restoration and foundation and drainage improvements.

Climate change: Improving heat tolerance in trees

Is it possible to improve tolerance of trees to high temperatures and other types of stress derived of climate change? A research group of the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM), led by Luis Gómez, a professor of the Forestry School and the Centre for Plant Biotechnology and Genomics (CBGP), is studying the tolerance of trees using molecular and biotechnological tools. The research work was published in the last issue of the journal Plant Physiology.

The obtained poplars in this project, with the collaboration of the Universidad de Málaga, are significantly more tolerant to high temperatures than the control trees. These trees are also more tolerant to drought, to the presence of weed-killer, to in vitro and ex vitro crops, to contamination and other ways of abiotic stress that have an applied interest for forestry. This work is a continuation of a project started by of a research team of the UPM a decade ago. This study focuses on mechanisms that plant cells use to protect themselves from stress factors.
