Mainland China's poultry may be quarantined at border

Live poultry from the mainland might be kept at a site near the border until they are confirmed to be free of the bird flu virus to avoid cross-infection with local birds, the health minister said.

While all poultry are currently kept at the Cheung Sha Wan wholesale market while they wait for test results, this led to locally bred birds being culled with infected mainland poultry last week, prompting complaints of losses from local breeders and traders.

Two new cases of H7N9 were reported in Guangdong yesterday. One was a 63-year-old man in Shenzhen who died on Saturday; the other, a 37-year-old man in Zhongshan, was in critical condition. More than 270 H7N9 infections have been reported on the mainland since the virus emerged in March last year.

All live poultry trade including imports have been suspended in Hong Kong until February 18 after a poultry sample from Guangdong tested positive for H7N9 last Monday.

Coimbatore:  Nearly 8.67 lakh farmers have quit agriculture and shifted to other sectors during the last 10 years in Tamil Nadu as per the 2011 census, a farmer's body leader said today.

Federation of Tamil Nadu Agricultural Associations Secreatary S Nallasami said that the Census suggested that from 2001 to 2011, 8,67,582 farmers have stopped agriculture due to various reasons, including huge loss.

Moreover, there was an increase in the number of agricultural labourers during the period, as the farmers sell their land to real estate and prefer to work on daily wage, he said in a release in Coimbatore.

He attributed the reason for the plight of the farmers to wrong import policy of the Centre, un-remunerative prices for farmers' produce, industrialistion and urbanisation, coupled with the failure to divert the rain and other waters going to sea to the farmers' fields, by linking rivers.

UP sugar industry owes Rs 4,600 crore to cane farmers

Sugar mills in the biggest sugarcane-producing state, Uttar Pradesh, have accumulated dues of over Rs 3,600 crore to farmers in the sugar season that started in October 2013. The rising arrears are set to become an issue in the run-up to the Lok Sabha polls due by May as millions of farmers and their families are dependent on sugarcane. The industry also owes farmers Rs 1,000 crore for sugarcane purchased in the 2012-13 season.

Based on purchases in the current season, the UP sugar mills should have paid Rs 5,900 crore to the farmers. However, as on 30 January, they had only paid Rs 2,300 crore. "This was expected to happen since the industry lacks the capacity to pay the announced sugarcane price. Sugar price has fallen further since the time this price was announced and we are helpless," said an industry executive.

India's wheat, rice exports raise hackles at WTO

NEW DELHI: The US, Canada and Pakistan have questioned India's export of wheat and rice, suggesting that subsidized grains have been shipped out providing gains to local traders.

The queries at the World Trade Organization (WTO) come weeks after these countries reluctantly agreed to India's demand for renegotiating the agreement related to food subsidies that turned into a make-or-break issue at the Bali ministerial meeting in December.

The government has denied the suggestions and said that India is complying with all international norms. "We are on the right track," said a top government official, dismissing the charges.

On January 29, at a meeting of the WTO's committee on agriculture, the US and Canada asked India about reports that it exported two million tonnes of wheat because of surplus stock, sources familiar with the discussions said. Canada then went on to ask if the floor price had been lowered to $260 a tonne from $300 a tonne proposed earlier, which was lower than the Canadian export price.
