Oregon’s agriculture leaders and innovators will be honored at the Agricultural Progress Awards dinner March 12.The event, hosted by the Oregon Department of Agriculture, celebrates progress in agriculture made through partnerships among business, higher education and state government.ODA Director Katy Coba will present the following awards:Oregon Product Retailer of the Year: Wilco, headquartered in Mt. Angel and the largest farm supply cooperative in the Pacific Northwest, for its service and support of Oregon agriculture.

Credit share: NBP leads market in agriculture lending

It is a pity that the share of agriculture — which employs 45% of the country’s labour force — in the outstanding loans to private-sector businesses was only 8.7% at the end of 2013.In fact, the lack of enthusiasm on the part of banks is so pronounced that the central bank has to set annual targets for each bank for agriculture loan disbursement.The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) has set the agriculture loan disbursement target at Rs360 billion for fiscal year 2013-14. In the first half of the year, banks disbursed Rs159.3 billion of the annual target, meaning they achieved 44.2% of the target in the first six months.“Agriculture is one of the most profitable segments for National Bank of Pakistan (NBP),” NBP Executive Vice President Shaheryar Qaisrani told The Express Tribune in a recent interview.

Indian scientists help create market-oriented agriculture for eastern and southern Africa

HYDERABAD: A sustainable and market-oriented agriculture is the way forward in making smallholder farming in Eastern and Southern Africa more profitable and resilient, and in feeding the region's growing population using the limited resources available now and in the future. Enabling farmers to adapt to changing environment and new opportunities, and making markets work for them are some of the key concerns raised at the three-day regional planning meeting of the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT). ICRISAT scientists from Hyderabad are coordinating with their counterparts in Kenya, Malawi, Ethiopia, Zimbabwe, as well as from West and Central Africa to achieve the targets.

Positive Future Tilapia Culture in Kerala

INDIA - Kerala could look forward to a “revolutionary” stride in tilapia culture and could annually generate Rs.700 crore worth of the fish through aquaculture, according to the Marine Products Export Development Authority.


The authority stated that the State had identified 12,000 hectares of water bodies suitable for fish culture and that the State Fisheries Department had decided to issue permission to fish farmers for farming of tilapia, a variety that flourishes in fresh and mildly saline waters, reports The Hindu.


MPEDA claimed that farmers in Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh, had over the last three years succeeded in tilapia culture adopting the methods developed by World Fish Centre, Malaysia and the help of MPEDA’s Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Aquaculture.
