Sugar mills in a fix as oil firms delay process to buy ethanol

Oil marketing companies – Indian Oil, Hindustan Petroleum and Bharat Petroleum - have, so far, issued letters of intent (LoIs) to procure about 24 crore litres of ethanol for the mandatory five per cent blending programme.

However, they are yet to place orders and start lifting ethanol, whereas sugarcane crushing for the 2013-14 season has gained momentum in the key States of Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra. This delay in ethanol procurement has put the sugar mills in a quandary.

Rajasthan to focus on ornamental flowers

Rajasthan has decided to take the ornamental path to tap the booming flower market by pro-actively promoting cultivation of decorative flowers like orchid, bird paradise and anthurium in select districts.

Some areas in the state are mainly producing marigold, roses, jasmine and now the government plans to encourage cultivation of popular ornamental flowers like Gerbera, bird paradise, Rajnigandha, tulip, lilium, orchid and anthurium due to its high potential, Agriculture Minister Prabhu Lal Saini said.

“We have decided to focus on the concept of decorative flower cultivation in the state and districts like Jaipur, Baran, Bundi, Sirohi, Alwar, Ajmer, which are suitable climatically, have been identified for cultivation,” Saini told PTI.

AP tobacco auctions to begin on Feb 15

Tobacco auctions in Andhra Pradesh are scheduled to begin from February 15, and all efforts are being made to close the auctions in Karnataka by that date, according to a press release.

The decision was taken after a recent meeting the board chairman K.Gopal held here with representatives of growers and officials. The chairman said the Tobacco Board had fixed a crop size of 172 million kgs for the current year in Andhra Pradesh based on the indications given by the Indian Tobacco Association.

Initial estimates put Andhra Pradesh's tobacco crop at 187 million kgs.
