European Commission Objects to Marine Harvest Early Acquisition of Morpol

EUROPE - The European Commission has sent objections to salmon farmer and processor Marine Harvest over early implementation of its acquisition of competitor Morpol.


In December 2012 Marine Harvest had acquired a 48.5 per cent stake in its fellow Norwegian company Morpol.


This transaction was notified only in August 2013 and cleared subject to conditions in September 2013 (see IP/13/896). In the Commission's preliminary view, Marine Harvest has failed to notify its project to acquire Morpol to the Commission before it was implemented, in breach of the EU Merger Regulation.


If the infringement is confirmed, the Commission may impose a fine of up to 10 per cent of the company's annual worldwide turnover. The sending of a statement of objections does not prejudge the outcome of the investigation.

International Poultry Council to meet in Istanbul

BRUSSELS, Belgium — The International Poultry Council has opened registration for its first-semester 2014 meeting, set for April 30 through May 2 at the InterContinental Istanbul Hotel.


Confirmed speakers include Dr. Alejandro Thiermann, president of the Terrestrial Animal Health Standards Commission of the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE). Thiermann will give an update on OIE standards and their impact on international poultry trade.


Also, Adriaan Weststrate of Rabobank International, will discuss the global poultry and feed outlook, and Christophe Gottar of Sealed Air Corp. will give a talk on packaging innovations and their impact on food safety and branding.

Women: Empowering Africa's agriculture backbone

Despite the role and impact of women in African agriculture, there's still an unsettling disparity in the support they receive compared to men. But what does the future hold for women farmers.


Do land, seeds and crops have a gender? Perhaps they do in sub-Saharan Africa, where women produce up to 80% of foodstuffs for household consumption and sale in local markets, according to a report by the World Bank and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).


For crops such as rice, wheat and maize make up about 90% of food consumed by rural dwellers, it is women who mostly sow the seeds, do the weeding, cultivate and harvest the crops and sell surpluses.

India Meteorological Department's Pune arm warns of poor rains

PUNE: India should brace for a weak monsoon season as El Nino conditions are likely to develop, but before rains dry up, the ongoing wet spell will continue until June, weather scientists have forecast, casting a shadow on the rabi harvest and the planting of summer crops such as paddy 


This is not the official monsoon forecast of India Meteorological Department (IMD), but the outlook prepared by the Pune-based Regional Climate Centre, which is a part of IMD. Forecasters from Australia, China, Korea and the US have issued El Nino warnings, but so far the Indian weather office has rubbished the concerns as western propaganda to rattle Indian markets.

Global Warming a Threat to United States and World Agriculture

In a review of scientific papers published since 2007 the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change declared that the world is already experiencing the impacts of climate change in areas like global security and food production. Global warming is a threat to agriculture in the United States and around the world, say the report’s authors.


These results were part of an extensive analysis and summary of climate change research published this week by the IPCC. Lead author Dr. Michael Oppenheimer said that food supply is the most pressing matter.


In North America, the IPCC reports several likely ways that food production will be disrupted. The report states with high confidence that climate change will have major impact on fisheries off both the East and West coasts of the United States.

World Bank's new agriculture project threatens food security, warn experts

A World Bank pilot project designed to measure and improve agricultural productivity will jeopardise food security in developing countries and create a "one-size-fits-all model of development where corporations reign supremely", according to a coalition of thinktanks and NGOs.


An international campaign – Our Land; Our Business – is urging the Bank to abandon its Benchmarking the Business of Agriculture (BBA) programme, claiming it will serve only to encourage corporate land grabs and undermine the smallholder farmers who produce 80% of the food consumed in the developing world.


The campaign, whose signatories include the US-based Oakland Institute thinktank and the Pan-African Institute for Consumer Citizenship and Development, argues that the Bank's attempts to adapt its ease-of-doing-business rankings to the agricultural sector will sow poverty "by putting the interests of foreign investors before those of locals".

Punjab must focus on R&D, extension & training services, post-harvest management

In order to push diversification in agriculture sector, Punjab must focus on research & development, extension & training services, post-harvest management, distribution & marketing channels, etc, according to a study conducted by Indian School of Business (ISB), Mohali. Currently, cropping pattern in the state is dominated by wheat and paddy. The Punjab Mandi Board entrusted the institute to undertake a research study analysing the potential of increase in the production of selected five commodities namely kinnow, maize, turmeric, moong and wood, as mentioned in the Agriculture Policy for Punjab-2013 (Draft) in terms of their existing markets and the potential to expand in the wake of proposed area expansion under alternate crops. The study was also intended to critically analyse the diversification strategy recommended by the Draft Policy and to enhance an understanding of how the government can best implement it. Earlier, Punjab government also demanded Rs 5,000 crore in 12th five year Plan for crop diversification in the state and asked the Centre to prepare a roadmap to bring the state out of wheat-paddy cultivation.
