Shrimp Market Opportunity for India

INDIA - Now is the opportune time for India to make its presence felt in the global shrimp market as leading players — Viet Nam and China have been affected by early mortality syndrome. The disease has almost wiped out the cultured shrimp population, said S. Kandan, Assistant Director of the Marine Products Export Development Authority.Mr Kandan was delivering a speech at a symposium on “Recent trends in shrimp farming” organised by the Centre of Advanced Study in Marine Biology, Annamalai University, at Porto Novo near here on Tuesday. He further said that the shrimp export was a major forex earner. It had netted Rs 23,000 crore last year. Though major aquaculture farmers had quit the profession, small farmers had stepped in, that too in a big way. The share of the small farmers in exports was about 60 per cent. Mr Kandan noted that in the early 70s shrimp farming witnessed a boom as many big companies had then set up farms on even 100 hectares, TheHindu reports. But in 1995 the outbreak of the white spot disease that decimated the young shrimps dealt a mortal blow to the shrimp culture. Environmental issues compounded the problem and took a toll on the trade.

Indian cotton exports likely to see a downward trend in 2014-15 over firm domestic supplies

India, the world's second-biggest cotton grower having already exported 8.8 million bales of natural fibre and is expected to ship 10 million bales in the current 2013-14 marketing year will see a downward trend in its cotton exports in the 2014-15 marketing year starting August as exportable supplies will be curbed by domestic demand and lower production.According to the latest report on cotton by US Department of Agriculture (USDA) India’s cotton exports are likely to plunge by 23 percent to 7.7 million bales in the marketing year 2014-15. One bale comprises of 170 kg of cotton. The country's total cotton production is pegged lower at 36 million bales for the 2014-15 marketing year, as against 37.2 million bales in the current year, due to probably lower crop yields. India is expected to again be a regional supplier to Pakistan, Bangladesh and Southeast Asian markets such as Vietnam and Indonesia. India exports medium-to-long staple cotton (25-32 mm length) to China, Bangladesh and Southeast Asian countries. China will likely be the key determiner of India's export volumes as per USDA.

Farming should be made profitable to attract youth

COIMBATORE: Technology and high revenue could make agriculture attractive to the younger generation, said Ajay Parida, executive director of M S Swaminathan Foundation. He was speaking at the valedictory function of the two-day workshop on 'Attracting and Retaining Youth in Agriculture' at the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) on Sunday. "Unless agriculture is made remunerative and attractive, it would be difficult to retain youth in the field," he said. When even existing farmers are moving away from farming, unless agriculture is made remunerative, it is unlikely that educated youngsters would take it up. Unless productivity or income is increased, farming cannot become an attractive venture for the young, he said. One way to attract the youth is to introduce implements for small land holdings. "Especially when there is an acute shortage of labour, there is no other option but to bring in equipment which will help farmers replace or at least reduce the need for manual labour," he said.

Students design robots to aid agriculture at IIT-Bombay

http://www.agribazaar.co/index.php?page=item&id=2493
MUMBAI: Robots that can sow seeds in a farm, robots that can remove weeds, robots used for fertilizing crops and robots that can even pluck fruits from trees and accumulate these at one place — these were some of the finalist entries at the e-Yantra Robotics Competition 2013 (e-YRC 2013), which was held recently at Indian Institute of Technology Bombay ( IIT Bombay).

The theme for this year's competition was 'Urban Agriculture'. Agriculture is a major industry in India contributing to over 15% of GDP and employing 50% of the workforce. India has been self sufficient in food production for more than a decade - however there are problems faced at every stage of food production, which lead to insufficient produce as well as wastage of food grains.
"eYRC-2013 aims to bring awareness to problems in the agriculture domain by assigning themes that involve processes in this vital domain. Four themes are used as exemplars of important stages in the agriculture production life cycle: seeding, weeding, fertilizing, and harvesting. Student teams from around the country have worked on prototypes of robots such as the seed sowing robot, weeding robot, fertilizing robot and fruit plucking robot," informed Prof. Kavi Arya, Principal Investigator, Project E-Yantra.
