Government Works with BC Salmon Farmers to Implement Leading International Standards

CANADA - John Duncan, Minister of State and Chief Government Whip and Member of Parliament for Vancouver Island North, on behalf of Michelle Rempel, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification, announced funding of over C$21,000 for the BC Salmon Farmers Association (BCSFA).

With funding from the Harper Government, the BCSFA will review leading international standards and practises in the global fish farming industry, define areas where BC fish farmers can further improve their practices, and then develop a plan to ensure that the BC industry maintains world-leading standards and practises.

First African study on biodiversity in genetically modified maize finds insects abundant

Previous studies from China, Spain, and the United States on genetically modified (GM) rice, cotton, and maize have concluded that the biodiversity of insects and related arthropods in GM crop fields was essentially the same as that among conventional crops. Now a new study from South Africa shows similar results.

The study is described in an article called "Comparative Diversity of Arthropods on Bt Maize and Non-Bt Maize in two Different Cropping Systems in South Africa," which appears in the February 2014 issue of Environmental Entomology.

Uncovering the drivers of honey bee colony declines and losses

Scientists have announced the results of research conducted on honey bee colony declines and the factors attributed to honey bee losses. The work shows that socioeconomic and political pressures on honey production over the past few decades has caused a long-term reduction in the number of colonies in production in the USA, Europe and many other countries. However, more recently honey bee managers have reported increased losses in their stocks each year (so-called 'annual colony losses'), and the new research shows that pests, pathogens and management issues likely play a major role in this, and are under researched and poorly understood drivers.

Honey bees provide ecosystem services through pollination of crops worth $215 billion annually worldwide. Concern over honey bee declines in recent decades as well as annual losses has sparked debate over their causes and has led to hypotheses that a specific novel syndrome 'Colony Collapse Disorder' (CCD) is plaguing bee populations. Many scientists have proposed new drivers such as pollution from pesticides as the cause of these declines. FAO welcomes historic commitment to end hunger in Africa by 2025

“This is the first time in history that African leaders have made such a strong pledge to eliminate hunger, " says FAO.

FAO Director-General José Graziano da Silva welcomed a breakthrough commitment by African heads of state to end hunger on the continent by 2025.

“This is the first time in history that African leaders have made such a strong pledge to eliminate hunger and it is also a show of confidence that, working together, we can win the fight against hunger in Africa in our lifetimes,” Graziano da Silva said after African Union (AU) Member States officially adopted the target at the AU Summit in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Enabling farmers to adapt to changing environment and new opportunities, and making markets work for them are some of the key concerns raised at the three-day regional planning meeting of the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT) held in Nairobi, Kenya. ICRISAT scientists and senior staff from Kenya, Malawi, Ethiopia, Zimbabwe, as well as from West and Central Africa and the ICRISAT headquarters in India participated in the meeting.

Wine farmers in high spirits as prices climb

PUNE: After a long gap, the wine farmers have a reason to cheer. As the wine grape crushing season kicks off in Maharashtra and Karnataka, growers are expecting to get about 15% higher price this year due to the shortage of wine grapes. They also hope that none of their grapes will remain uncrushed due to good demand from the wineries.

The crushing season of wine grapes is from February till March. This year, the total crushing in the country is expected to be about 40,000 tonne, including the crushing of the table grapes Thompson and Bangalore Purple, which are used for manufacturing grape spirits, an increase of about 20% over the previous year.

MEXICO - In order to reduce the risk of disease in shrimp farming in the northeast, the National Health Service, Food Safety and Quality (SENASICA) is conducting an ongoing health programme.


Taking place in Mazatlan, Sinaloa, the first session was provided to officials responsible for overseeing compliance fallowing and covered essential technical points that should be evaluated for issuing certificates.


The second session covered regulatory information for officers to properly enforce the fallowing of shrimp farms in northwestern Mexico.

China's poultry industry wants to hush up bird flu news in damage control bid

Poultry associations send open letters asking government to temper coverage of the outbreak amid billion-yuan losses


China’s poultry industry leaders have asked health authorities to share less information about an outbreak of bird flu, as sales have suffered from an ever increasing death toll.


In open letters, the national association of poultry farmers and their provincial counterparts in Guangxi and Guangdong have as asked local authorities to “stop reporting individual cases of H7N9”, referring to the deadly bird flu strain, according to a report in the state-run Xinhua news agency.
