Cashew prices soar to all-time high

PANAJI: Cashew nut prices have notched another high this year as processors offered the best-ever price of Rs 95 per kg, but farmers are worried fluctuations in weather may scorch their dreams of a good harvest.When the season started towards the end of February 2014, the first arrivals commanded good value in the market. "Never in the history of cashew farming in the state have prices of Rs 93 to Rs 95 been paid per kg," Goa cashew (processors) manufacturers association advisor A S Kamath said.A bumper crop in the last 2012-13 season yielded 35% more crop on the west coast from Kerala to Maharashtra. "Though Goa's production had declined from 24,000 metric tonnes to about 18,000 metric tonnes in the last few years the state produced more than 24,000 tonnes last season," Goa cashew processors association president Madhav Sahakari said.

Govt will provide maximum relief to hailstorm-hit farmers: Prithviraj Chavan

Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan on Wednesday assured that his government is committed to provide relief to hailstorm-hit farmers in the state and appealed to them not to take any “untoward decision” that could harm them.

Chavan’s statement comes in the wake of reports that several farmers have committed suicide in the hailstorm affected districts.

“As you all know Lok Sabha elections have been declared and the Model Code of Conduct has been enforced. Considering the magnitude of devastation, the government is trying its best to provide maximum relief to the affected farmers,” Chavan said.

Unseasonsal rain, hailstorms trigger farmers’ suicides in Maharashtra, 18 dead

MUMBAI: The issue of farmers' suicide seems to have resurfaced with a vengeance in Maharashtra following the recent bout of unseasonal showers and hailstorms in the state. While sources working closely with the government have said that around 18 farmers have killed themselves between February 22 and March 18, social activists claim the figure could be between 80 and 100 — more than the average for every two months.Meanwhile, Maharashtra's chief minister, Prithviraj Chavan has assured farmers of the area that their plight will be immediately taken into account. He has also appealed to the farmers to not take any 'emotional step' and has reiterated that the government is acutely aware of destruction that has been brought on by the untimely rain.The state cabinet has called an urgent meeting on Wednesday to discuss relief and rehabilitation for hailstorm-hit areas.

Farmers want to vote with their feet

A recent study conducted by the Centre for the Study of Developing Societies (CSDS) observes that over 60% of Indian farmers prefer to move to cities in search of alternative employment opportunities. Not surprisingly, as the survey indicates, the mood in favour of migration out of villages has come in the wake of decreasing returns from agriculture. With only 20% of the surveyed youth showing interest in continuing farming, it seems like the urge to migrate towards cities is only likely to increase.

From a historical perspective, the movement of labour away from agriculture is normal, as is evident from countries that have managed to move up the income bracket in the past. Notably, the idea of growing difference in returns between industry and agriculture (in favour of the former) facilitating the movement of surplus labour from agriculture to industry was popularized by the Nobel prize-winning economist Arthur Lewis in the 1950s.

Kasturirangan said that India currently spends about 0.7 per cent of the agricultural GDP on agricultural research and development, while it is widely believed by experts that India needs to raise it to one per cent of the GDP if it has to raise the agricultural production and make it sustainable.
