Farmers plan sit-in at Wagah from 31st

ISLAMABAD: Farmers will stage a sit-in at Wagah border from March 31 for an indefinite period against the government’s plan to give the Non-Discriminatory Market Access (NDMA) to India.

Addressing a press conference here on Monday Pakistan Kissan Ittehad (PKI) President Khalid Mahmood Khokhar said that the Ittehad was receiving calls from all parts of the country every day whereby farmers, small businesses and associations were offering support to join the sit-in.

Representatives of Pakistan Cotton Ginners Association (PCGA), Farmers’ Association of Pakistan (FAP), and Rice Millers Association were also present to show solidarity with the Kissan Ittehad.

US asks India to submit data on food security scheme to WTO

Targeting India’s Food Security Programme, the US has questioned its efficiency and has said that the country should spell out measures to increase the programme’s effectiveness.

It has also demanded that India submit all relevant statistics and documents on the programme to the World Trade Organisation (WTO) in order to gain immunity against penalties in case subsidies breach specified limits.

“The matter will come up for detailed discussion at the meeting of the WTO’s Committee on Agriculture next week,” a Government official told Business Line.

India fought hard at the WTO’s Ministerial Meeting in Bali in December to keep procurement subsidies under India’s Food Security Programme out of the list of subsidies classified as ‘trade distorting’. In case ‘trade distorting’ subsidies breach 10 per cent of the production value, a country is subject to penalties.

Paddy price looks firm

CLOSE to 800,000 tonnes of paddy rice will be harvested in Australia between March and May, according to SunRice chairman Gerry Lawson.

This will be supplemented by as much as 120,000t of 2013 paddy being carried over.

Mr Lawson said there had been a significant improvement in global medium grain prices recently and this movement was aligned with the US drought currently affecting California which in early February 2014 was expected to reduce production by 20 to 45 per cent.

"While there has been some rain since that assessment, the outlook is still for a lower Californian crop, which bodes well for the price outlook," he said.

Botanists Should Help ISRO on Agri Sat

Botanists and biologists must join hands with the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) to launch an ‘Agri Satellite’ for increasing yield on the lines of China’s ‘Space Seed Experiment,’ said former secretary and ex-member (Finance) of Atomic Energy Commission V V Bhat on Monday.

He was speaking at a workshop ‘A Day With Farmers’ organised by the Department of Studies in Botany of University of Mysore in the city.

He said China has increased its agricultural yield by 25 per cent through ‘Space Seed Experiment’.  “Under the concept, seeds are sent to space in satellites in order to develop new crop breeds by identifying mutation through space radiation,” he said.

India's rice warrior battles to build living seed bank as climate chaos looms

Fifty years ago, every Indian village would probably have grown a dozen or more rice varieties that grew nowhere else. Passed down from generation to generation and family to family, there would have been a local variety for every soil and taste – rice that would grow well in droughts or deep floods, which had the aroma of mangoes or peanuts, tolerance for saltwater or medicinal value.

Back then, says the rice conservationist Debal Deb, India may have had more than 100,000 landraces, or local varieties. "Today there could be just 6,000, with fewer being grown every year. Every community had its own varieties. The rest are no longer cultivated and the knowledge of how to grow them will have been lost."

Deb, a plant scientist turned farmer, is on a mission not just to reintroduce the lost varieties but to improve agriculture for an age of climate change and scarcity. He is cultivating 920 rice varieties on just 2.5 acres in a forested area of the Niyamgiri hills, where the indigenous people last year

Narayan Shamba Paryekar from Tarir-Dhave, Sattari, is the only hope for its survival and revival, as he takes it upon himself, the mission to preserve the age-old tradition.Puran sheti is the silt based agricultural system which was prevailing in Sattari, Dharbandora and Bicholim talukas over a decade ago. Today, with the onset of the vasant bandharas, puran sheti is practiced by none, except a sole 61-year-old follower in Tarir, located on the right bank of the Mhadei river, on the borders of Dhave and Cudshe villages, in Sattari taluka. "Since many generations, my family is traditionally involved in practicing puran sheti, it helps me consolidate my source of livelihood," Paryekar said.
