Chipotle takes aim at animal agriculture

DENVER – Chipotle Mexican Grill has developed a marketing campaign that endeavors to sell values along with a few burritos.
“Farmed and Dangerous” is being billed as “a Chipotle original comedy series” that casts a satirical eye toward what it calls industrial agriculture. Viewers can watch the four-episode series on video streaming service Hulu and Hulu Plus starting Feb. 17. The company says the series “satirizes the lengths to which corporate agribusiness and its image-makers go to create a positive image of industrial agriculture.” The series introduces viewers to the PetroPellet, a petroleum-based animal feed produced by a fictional company, Animoil. Animoil promises the PetroPellet will reduce the agriculture industry's dependence on oil by eliminating the need to produce the feed used to raise livestock on large-scale operations.

CANR alumna reflects on introduction to agriculture, Maryland post

In fact, before coming to UD’s College of Agriculture and Natural Resources (CANR), Setting — who grew up in the city in downtown Wilmington — had very little interaction with agriculture at all

Now, after a little over 36 years working at the state of Maryland’s Department of Agriculture, Setting has learned a thing or two about the subject.

Setting said her initial introduction to agriculture came as a youth, when she and her mother would travel to the King Street Farmers Market and interact with the farmers there. A farmer would deliver fresh eggs and fruit and vegetables to her house, and that same farmer would take his customers out to his farm as a sort of customer appreciation day.

But other than that, Setting had very little background in the field when she chose to study entomology at UD.

Farmers want mobile procurement centres for buying cotton, onion

Farmers on Thursday urged the district administration to introduce mobile procurement centres for the procurement of cotton, shallot (sambar onion), and maize to enable farmers to get reasonable price for their produce.

Chelladurai, district secretary of the Tamil Nadu Vivasayigal Sangam, said at the farmers’ grievances day meeting here that besides the poor yield of the rain-fed crops because of monsoon failure, farmers were worried at the poor price being offered by traders for their produce.

The price offered was lower than the expenses incurred by farmers.

The farmers were offered a paltry Rs. 12 a kg for shallot and for this too they had to depend on Tiruchi market. The district administration should make arrangements to help farmers market their produce at reasonable price and should come forward to open mobile procurement centres in the district.
