African Union summit launches 2014 year of agriculture

The 22nd African Union (AU) summit kicked off Thursday at the AU headquarters in Ethiopia's capital Addis Ababa.

At the opening of the summit, the AU heads of state launched the 2014 Year of Agriculture and Food Security marking the 10th anniversary of the adoption of the Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Program (CAADP), Xinhua reported.

Preceded by the sessions of the Permanent Representatives Committee Jan 21-23 and the Executive Council Jan 27-29, the summit is being held under the theme of 'Transforming Africa's Agriculture: Harnessing Opportunities for Inclusive Growth and Sustainable Development'.

Hybrid pigeonpea technology achieves record yield

HYDERABAD: Over 70 smallholder farmers and seed producers from Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Gujarat collectively endorsed and recognized the contribution of hybrid pigeonpea in achieving food and nutrition security, resilience and improved livelihood. The hybrids in the crop (first in world in any legume) are the results of the crop improvements efforts by the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT) based in Hyderabad.

Despite facing challenges such as resource scarcity, climate change and degradation of soil fertility, farmers from the five states cultivating the ICRISAT hybrids reported significant increase in pigeonpea yields. A medium-duration ICRISAT hybrid, ICPH 2740, demonstrated 38% higher yields than other local varieties.

Agriculture ‘engine of growth' that Africa needs

Agriculture must become the engine for growth that Africa needs to eradicate hunger and boost sustainable food production, FAO Director-General José Graziano da Silva said today.Speaking at a side event on the margins of the African Union Summit in Addis Ababa, Graziano da Silva called on Africa to step up its efforts."More than one out of every five of its citizens is still denied the right to food," the Director-General said. Noting that most of the 10 fastest growing economies in the world are in Africa, he stressed that the region had the power to change the situation.The challenge for Africa is to make this economic growth more inclusive by targeting agricultural and rural development, women and young people, he said.Some 75 percent of Africans are 25 years old and under, and the population is expected to remain largely rural for the next 35 years, with women heading up many households."Agriculture is the only sector of the economy capable of absorbing this workforce," the Director-General said. "There is no inclusive and sustainable way forward for Africa without women, youth and agriculture

Argentine Ambassador, addressing business community at the Islamabad Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ICCI), said Argentina could transfer modern technology to Pakistan for quality meat production since the country has strength in the field. He said Argentina could send its experts to help Pakistan reap its full potential in Halal meat sector.Rodolfo said that his country could also support Pakistan with technology and expertise to increase per acre yield in agriculture. He asked businessmen to widely participate in Gulfood 2014 Expo being held at Dubai from 23. He added 50 to 60 Argentine companies are attending this year’s exhibition.

Ghanaian Agriculture Projects Gets US$22m Boost

The USAID-Financing Ghanaian Agriculture Project, USAID-FinGAP, has been launched in Accra.The five-year project wil focus on attracting finance options for rice, maize and soy value chains in northern Ghana.The US$22 million project will identify and develop agri-business opportunities and facilitate investments from financial institutions through the use of business advisory service providers.The Director of USAID Mission, Mr Jim Bever, speaking at the launch of the project, stated that FinGAP was bringing commercial investments into agriculture, not only to increase food security but also to reduce poverty. He said the beneficiaries of the FinGAP would include farmers and Small Medium Enterprises (SMEs) who were into agribusiness.

PAC picks holes in agriculture debt waiver scheme

New Delhi: A parliamentary committee has picked holes in the ambitious agriculture debt waiver and debt relief scheme of the UPA government saying it could not achieve its goals due to a variety of reasons including violation of guidelines and poor monitoring. Parliament's Public Accounts Committee (PAC) in its draft report on the scheme said there was a "flagrant display of financial and administrative indiscipline by the Department of Financial Services (of the Finance Ministry), nodal agencies and implementing institutions in the implementation of such a welfare scheme."

Somali Gov’ encourages agriculture sector

Somalia’s government said it will help formers to encourage the agriculture sector, following a meeting between Prime Minister Abdiweli Sheikh Ahmed and members of the country’s formers that took place today.


PM Abdiweli said that strong export led agriculture sector key to securing Somalia’s future and Somalia’s economic recovery.


“This type of meeting is very important, they give us the chance to hear direct from the Somali people the challenges and hopes they have. I come from a family of farmers and I was educated at an agriculture secondary school so I have a good understanding of agriculture and it is something I am deeply passionate about.” The Prime Minister said.
