Funds to boost agriculture “wasted” due to lack of education, hears Dubai summit

DUBAI // The Government must spend more on research and development to boost food production and make it more efficient, experts say.Ray Moule, the technical director at the Farmers’ Services Centre – responsible for modernising Abu Dhabi farms – said existing funds to promote agricultural schemes were being wasted because of a lack of support and education for farmers.Mr Moule pointed to the financial support made available to encourage farmers to adopt water-conserving systems, such as hydroponics.He said these moves were failing because there was a lack of understanding among farmers about the systems.

China smog threatens agriculture with nuclear-fallout conditions, warn scientists

Smog in China could block light as effectively as a nuclear fallout and will bring disaster to agricultural production, mainland scientists warned.Already, the choking air conditions – which blanketed one-quarter of the mainland’s land area – have had detrimental effects on agriculture.He Dongxian, an associate professor with China Agricultural University’s College of Water Resources and Civil Engineering, said on Monday that the school conducted an experiment in Beijing on smog's effect on plants over the last few months and observed a drastic slowdown in photosynthesis, which is the main process that allows plants to survive.Applied on a larger scale, such slowdowns could spell trouble for China’s agriculture, which contributes some 10 per cent to its GDP.

International Agriculture Show: farming for the future

Until March 2, the exhibition centre at Porte de Versailles in Paris is hosting the 51st edition of the International Agricultural Show, an important yearly event, which attracts some 700 thousand visitors.

‘‘The competitiveness is linked with the level of expenses, and we have gone from second place three of four years ago to fifth place today. We must stop to going backwards, we must take control again of the market shares, we must restore our competitiveness and French farmers are definitely ready for that challenge,’‘ he added.

57 farm products enjoy GI status in India

Government has granted Geographical Indicator (GI) status to around 57 agricultural products such as Darjeeling tea, Pokkali rice and Dharwad Pedha in the last ten years. 

India enacted the Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration & Protection) Act, 1999, which came into effect on September 15, 2003. The GI label certifies not only the geographical origin of a product but also confirms adherence to some production standards. 

So far, 195 GIs have been registered with the GI Registry of India and of these, approximately 57 GIs are related to agriculture and manufactured food such as tea, coffee, mangoes, oranges, grapes, sweets and savoury snacks, the official said. 

Kalanamak Rice from Uttar Pradesh was given the GI status early in this financial year, the official added.

A better potato for India, via Israeli tech

When he visits family on vacation from his post at Israel’s Vulcani Agricultural Research Institute, Dr. Akhilesh Kumar is always struck by the two very different New Delhis he experiences. One is the city of haves, where people can phone up a fast food joint and get a nice meal delivered. The other is the city of have nots, down in the street, among the penniless, hungry beggars that the delivery person has to wade through to make his delivery. “The food is there, but it isn’t getting to everyone,” Kumar said.

 “The problem in India is not a lack of food. In truth, India grows enough food to feed itself.

The problem isn’t one of poor agriculture, but poor distribution, Kumar told The Times of Israel in an exclusive interview. “The biggest crop in India is the potato, and in fact India is the second largest producer of potatoes in the world after China (the country produced 45 million metric tons of potato in 2012, approximately 12.2% of total global potato production). But those potatoes are mostly produced in the winter, and when harvest time comes, there is a glut on the market.

Bihar scaling new heights in agriculture production: Nitish

PATNA: Once regarded as a backward state on agriculture front also, Bihar is now hogging the limelight at national level and its farmers are getting national awards due to their hard work, said chief minister Nitish Kumar on Monday. He said farmers should adopt the 'system of rice intensification (SRI)' method to maximize the yield.Launching SRI Sanskriti and Kisan Gaurav Abhiyan Kharif-2014 and green belt programme at Dr C P Thakur College in Chechaul village under Naubatpur block of Patna district, Nitish said five of Bihar's farmers broke world record in paddy production and created new record in the yield of potato and wheat. In 2011-12, two state farmers were honoured with Krishi Karman Award for paddy production and in 2012-13 two more farmers received the same award in wheat production. The CM felicitated four Krishi Karman awardee farmers - Shanti Devi, Sumant Kumar, Kamla Prakash and Zahid Khan - with Kisan Gaurav Samman.
