Ghana-Israel Seminar Targets Investment Opportunities In Agriculture

The Ghana-Israel Agricultural Business Opportunities Seminar slated for March 3, 2014, would explore trade and investment opportunities in the agricultural sector and potential future collaborations between Ghana and Israel. The seminar is part of activities marking the official visit of the Israeli Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Yair Shamir, together with powerful agro-business delegation.Ms Mina Okuru, Public Diplomacy Coordinator, Embassy of Israel in Ghana said in a statement copied to the Ghana News Agency yesterday.Israel is a major exporter of fresh produce and a world-leader in agricultural technologies despite the fact that the geography of Israel is not naturally conducive to agriculture.Only 20 per cent of the land area is naturally arable but today Israel’s agriculture represents close to three percent of its total gross.

Nakaseke special economic zone to lift agriculture

A number of multibillion agricultural investment projects, flagged off by President Museveni recently in Nakaseke district, represent the latest ray of hope for a sector perennially praised  as key to Uganda’s fortunes, but starved of meaningful investments. On February 18, Museveni commissioned works for the construction of a dairy and beef processing factory at Kaweweta, part of the cattle corridor. Turkish firm ASB Group will invest $300 million (Shs 750bn) in the project, which includes building a modern abattoir, dairy factory, grazing facilities and infrastructure such as roads and an airfield in the area.According to a State House statement, ASB will also establish agro-processing factories for such crops as cotton, coffee and fruits (pineapples, oranges and mangoes) from out-growers. Two days earlier, the president was in Kasangombe sub-county, still in Nakaseke, to open a maize factory and mushroom house, owned by Chinese investor Qui Lijan of Hanhe Uganda Farm Company.

Nigerian agriculture: Not there yet, but making progress

Africa’s agricultural potential is a relevant topic considering growing populations and worldwide food insecurity, especially in Africa. The World Bank states that 60% of the world’s uncultivated, arable land is in sub-Saharan Africa, yet many African countries have to import the majority of their food to feed their populations.According to Caroline Kende-Robb, executive director of the Africa Progress Panel, Nigeria is estimated to import US$2bn of rice annually, although it has the potential to be exporting this amount.“That to me kind of typifies the challenges of agriculture in Africa because you see this huge country with all this potential for exporting rice. Now the new minister [of agriculture] is trying to do something about that and they are doing a lot of investing to try and balance that. But that is such a waste on so many different levels,” Kende-Robb told How we made it in Africa.

Getting prices right was my priority

chairman of the Commission for Agricultural Costs and Prices (CACP) for the last three years, Ashok Gulati’s thrust has been to recommend higher hike in minimum support prices (MSPs) for import-intensive oilseeds and pulses, and relatively lower MSP hikes for rice and wheat to curb excess stocks. As Gulati prepares to relinquish his office on Friday, he spoke to FE’s Sandip Das on a range of issues impacting Indian agriculture. With your three-year stint at CACP coming to an end, what do you think are the major achievements of the commission during this period? When I took up this job in March 2011, I knew I had just three years. So, I set out only two goals: get the prices right, and get the markets right. I believe that farmers cannot get the right prices for their produce if markets are strangulated. You may recall that exports of wheat and common rice were banned since September 2007. This type of a restrictive export policy is a hidden instrument of taxing peasantry.

World fish trade to set new records: FAO

India Infoline News Service/ Mumbai 14:56 , Feb 21, 2014

Global fishery production from wild capture fisheries and aquaculture is expected to set a new record in 2013 at 160 million tonnes

The booming world fish trade is generating more wealth than ever before, but countries must help small-scale fishers and fish farmers benefit too, FAO said today.

Global fishery production from wild capture fisheries and aquaculture is expected to set a new record in 2013 at 160 million tonnes, up from 157 million tonnes the previous year, while exports will reach $136 billion, according to preliminary data published ahead of the FAO Sub-Committee on Fish Trade meeting in Bergen, Norway, next week.

“The record trade figures reflect the strong growth in aquaculture output and the high prices for a number of species such as salmon and shrimp,” said Audun Lem, Chief of FAO’s Products, Trade and Marketing Branch. “This is underpinned by firm underlying demand for fish products from world markets.”
