Further to the call for responsible businesses to align to the goals of the United Nations as articulated in the Rio+20 Outcome document The Future We Want, the United Nations Global Compact has been facilitating the development of voluntary Food and Agriculture Business Principles (FABs) – formerly know as the Sustainable Agriculture Business Principles - to provide guidance to all business in agriculture, processing, trading, manufacturing, distribution and retailing. In this context, you are invited to share your views and give feedback on the draft principles.

The Pulses Conclave 2014 is a resounding success

India Pulses and Grains Association successfully hosted THE PULSES CONCLAVE 2014, a three day mega event for the global pulses trade and industry during February 19- 21 in Goa. Over 800 delegates from India and across 24 countries including Australia, USA, Canada, Russia, Spain, Pakistan, Kenya, Myanmar to name a few participated in the Conclave. Business worth over Rs. 500 crore was transacted. 


Pravin Dongre, Chairman, India Pulses and Grains Association, speaking about the Conclave said, “We are overwhelmed by the stupendous response the Conclave has received from the trade and industry across India and the world. The Conclave has provided a huge opportunity for all participants to Converge-Connect-Capitalise through trade tie-ups and strategic alliances. India is the epicenter of global pulses trade; and through this endeavor we are trying to bring the trade across geographies closer.”

Manual fodder cutters sought to benefit small-scale cattle owning farmers

Wastage reduced to 10 per cent while it is 25 per cent for direct feeding’


Farmers in the district have made an appeal to the Government to distribute manual fodder cutters to benefit farmers owning less than three cows. This would be in addition to the already existing distribution of mechanised fodder cutters at a subsidised rate for the benefit of farmers doing large scale business.


Farmers and Animal Husbandry Department (AHD) officials said that 25 per cent of fodder is wasted when it is given to animals for direct feeding.


“This can be reduced to 10 per cent when it is cut into small pieces using a fodder cutter. This would be of much use to farmers when there is drop in the fodder production, due to inadequate rainfall”, they added.

Govt moves closer to allow field trials for GM crops in India

NEW DELHI: Even as the final call on fate of genetically modified (GM) food crops in India will be taken by the Supreme Court, the government on Wednesday made its intention clear by announcing that it does not have any reservation against transgenic crop if it passes the test of field trials under strict "crop-specific dedicated monitoring protocols system". 


Government's stand over GM crops was articulated by the Union agriculture minister Sharad Pawar here at a 'National Conference on Agriculture for Kharif Campaign' which among other things also took stock of the country's contingency plan to deal with eventuality of poor Monsoon under recently predicted El Nino conditions. 


The minister also made it clear that the scientific "field trial" of transgenic crops would be allowed in coming months, indicating that the Genetics Engineering Appraisal Committee (GEAC) - the regulatory body for genetically engineered crops - will resume meeting for this purpose soon ending a two-year long break on decision-making process.

Crops in 18 districts of MP damaged due to rains, hailstorm

BHOPAL: Crops of gram and wheat across 640 villages in 18 districts have suffered extensive damage due to unseasonal rains and hailstorm in the last three days. 


The government has ordered district collectors to conduct a survey of damaged crops and submit their reports soon, official sources said. 


The average rainfall recorded in 37 districts in the last three days stood between 15 mm to 50 mm. 


Apart from gram and wheat crops, those for lentils, including arhar, also suffered extensive damage.

The South Australian Labor party has revealed $6 million worth of agricultural sweeteners in the lead up to the state election.If re-elected on March 15, the Labor Government has pledged to spend $1.3 million, over four years, for a consultant program to help farmers manage their businesses.Agriculture minister Gail Gago also committed to a $1.35 million program, over four years, to promote South Australian food to overseas markets.She also announced funding worth $1.1 million dollars for research and development into new foods, like omega three enriched eggs, and $1.15 million for a new website promoting agricultural investment opportunities in the state.
