Cane crushing picks up in Maharashtra, UP, Karnataka

After a delayed start following the controversy over cane pricing issue, sugarcane crushing for the 2013-14 season has picked up. More mills have begun operations in the key producing states of Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh and Karnataka.DowntrendHowever, sugar production is down 50 per cent at 24.24 lakh tonnes as on December 15 against the corresponding period a year ago.Some 426 sugar mills have started crushing cane against 457 mills last year, according to the Indian Sugar Mills Association (ISMA). Maharashtra has crushed 128 lakh tonnes to produce 12 lakh tonnes of sugar, down 35 per cent compared with last year.About 150 mills have started operations against 155 mills last year, of which 56 are in the private sector.In 2012-13 season that ended in September, about 170 mills crushed 70 million tonnes of cane to produce 80 lakh tonne sugar.

Milk output seen rising to 139.68 mt this year

The Government expects milk production to increase to 139.68 million tonnes (mt) in 2013-14, up 5.5 per cent over last year’s 132.43 mt.A quantity of “139.68 million tonnes of milk production is anticipated in 2012-14,” the Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Processing Industries, Charan Das Mahant, told the Rajya Sabha in a written reply. Milk production increased steadily from 116.4 mt in 2009-10 to 132.43 mt in 2012-13.The Animal Husbandry Dairying and Fisheries Department does not control the price of milk, Mahant said.It is implementing schemes such as the National Dairy Plan Phase I and Intensive Dairy Development Programme to enhance production of milk, which also contributes to stabilising milk prices. The NDP Phase I is being implemented for six years from 2011-12 to 2016-17 in 14 major milk producing States to help increase productivity of milch animals and, thereby, increase milk production.

China reports new H7N9 case

GUANGZHOU - Authorities in south China's Guangdong Province confirmed a new H7N9 bird flu case on Sunday.

A 39-year-old man, surnamed He, has been hospitalized and is in serious condition, the provincial health authorities said in a statement.

The statement said the resident in Dongguan City tested positive for the virus on Saturday in a local hospital, and the result was confirmed on Sunday by the provincial disease control center.

Success for Silver Pompano in Andhra Pradesh

INDIA - The first crop of the highly valued Silver Pompano fish cultivated in Krishna district, in the state of Andhra Pradesh, for the first time is ready for harvest.The marine fish, locally known as Chanduva Para, which is being cultivated in two acres of brackish water in Nagayalanka mandal, survived without any retardation in growth despite the recent bad weather. The Hindu reports that this is the first marine fish being cultivated in brackish waters in Krishna district.Scientists from the Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI), Chennai, provided the Silver Pompano seed to the Nagayalanka-based farmer, T. Raghu Sekhar, in July. The tenant farmer sowed the seed in his two-acre pond at Peda Kammavaripalem in Nagayalanka mandal.

Shrimp Farmers Advised Against Cropping in Dry-out Period

INDIA - The Indian Fisheries University has advised shrimp farmers not to take up cropping during the dry-out period starting December. With the completion of harvest by prawn farms engaged in the cultivation of L. Vannamei species, the university has issued the advisory for shrimp farms in the district.The advisory calls for better pond bottom management, water management, disease prevention, and biosecurity measures from shrimp cultivators during the dry-out period between December and February.According to The Hindu, farms have been advised to desist from taking up intermittent crop during the dry period due to inclement weather conditions. The water temperature may be inimical to a healthy crop leading to spread of diseases from one pond to another.
