Anyone can export onions again after four decades

PUNE: For close to four decades, export of onion could take place only through the agencies designated by the government. Now anyone can export onions, as the Central government freed export of the bulb by removing this condition last week. Onion export was canalised in 1974. National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation (Nafed) was the only canalising agency till 1999. Subsequently, 12 State Trading Enterprises (STEs) along with Nafed were designated as the canalising agencies for export of onion. The exporter had to pay 1% commission to these agencies in order to get the no-objection certificate for exports. As the country is expecting an all-time-high onion crop in 2014-15, the government about to face the electorate, removed the minimum export price (MEP) restrictions, which were imposed during winter season as retail prices touched Rs 100/kg.

Mamata Banerjee’s tab on agri commodity prices makes Bengal traders jittery

KOLKATA: Traders in Bengal are a worried lot. Keeping elections in mind, chief minister Mamata Banerjee had given a diktat to the trading community to keep a check on the prices of agri commodities just before the election dates were declared.And she had asked the chief secretary to take stock of the situation every fortnight, which has now become a major concern for the traders as prices are already inching upwards."Didi had told us to keep prices under check as the elections are round the corner. But it will be difficult for us to keep prices under control. There may not be rude shocks but prices will definitely not be on the lower side as the summer has already set in," said Dilip Pratihar, secretary, West Bengal Potato Merchants Association. The CM wants to ensure that a sudden price rise in agricultural commodities does not become an election issue. But her wish does not seem to become reality.

FAIR OAKS, IND. –  Farms around the nation have tried to capitalize on consumers' interest in how food is produced with tours showcasing organic vegetable production, urban agriculture and animals that graze on lush pastures.

The mammoth industrial farms that produce most of the food that most Americans eat, however, remain largely off-limits.

An exception is in northern Indiana where tourists can visit a high-tech dairy farm, tour a massive creamery where cheese and ice cream are made and see piglets born on a hog farm. The collection of properties known as Fair Oaks Farms draws as many as 500,000 visitors per year.

Sask. agriculture budget $35 million less than last year

Saskatchewan Agriculture Minister Lyle Stewart is hopeful the province will continue producing record crops despite a 2014-15 budget that comes in $35 million lower than last fiscal year.

The province’s total agriculture budget this fiscal year is $371.6 million. Last year’s budget was $406.9 million.

“This budget will build on the record crop production and exports in 2013 to help the industry continue to grow in the future,” Stewart said in a media release.

Agriculture Minister Barnaby Joyce announces live sheep, cattle exports to Egypt will resume

Australia will recommence exporting sheep and cattle to Egypt after the government struck a deal with Egyptian importers on animal welfare standards.

It's been two years since cattle was last exported to Egypt after shocking footage of cruelty at two Egyptian abattoirs. It led to an industry-wide live trade suspension. Sheep haven't been exported to Egypt since 2006.

Agriculture Minister Barnaby Joyce said the Australian and Egyptian governments had now come to an agreement on ''all matters'' to restart live sheep and cattle exports, including an agreement on the Exporter Supply Chain Assurance System (ESCAS).

ESCAS requires Australian exporters to establish supply chains consistent with global animal health standards. The deal follows the recent resumption of sheep exports to Bahrain after a two year hiatus.

KP enacts law to modernise agriculture

PESHAWAR: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly on Tuesday passed a law for establishment and regularisation of farm services centres on the basis of public private partnership.

The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Farm Services Centres Act, 2014, states that government shall establish farm services centers in all districts of the province.

Provincial Minister for Agriculture Shehram Tarakai tabled the bill, which was passed with majority vote in the assembly.
