Indian sugar exports rise, but WTO members demand removal of subsidies

While India’s sugar exports have been surging, several members of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) - including the European Union (EU), Australia, Brazil and Colombia - have demanded that the country remove the subsidies that were granted to Indian sugar exports in February 2014.At a recent WTO meeting, the aforementioned nations asked India about the new policy that involves the payments of incentives to Indian sugar exporters. The incentive paid to them - Rs 3,300 per tonne - has helped Indian exporters find newer and cheaper markets overseas.   The availability of a substantial amount of water has helped farmers increase the production of sugar. The dry climate in Brazil, the world’s largest producer of sugar, also helped India grab the market.

IT professionals extend help to region's farmers

AURANGABAD: Apulkee - an NGO formed by IT professionals, launched 'Mazi Sanvedana Maza Shetkari' campaign on the occasion of Gudi Padwa with an aim to raise funds to help farmers affected by unseasonal rain and hailstorm in Marathwada and Vidarbha. On Sunday a team comprising three members visited Devgaon in Marathwada region. Group member Abhijeet Falke said, "Apulkee is planning to raise funds for five hailstorm-hit villages in Vidarbha and Marathwada. Our target is to raise Rs 22.50 lakh." "Our objective is to help farmers in all possible manner. During our visit to Devgaon, we discussed issues with farmers of Jay Jawan Jay Kisan group. We created awareness on use of technology in farming which would not only help them overcome labour scarcity but also know about weather forecast through cellphones. We also created awareness on the use of internet and gave tips on the importance of marketing and processing. Apulkee is the first NGO to exhibit farmers' processed products abroad," said member Vipul Deshmukh. "Earlier, we visited two hail-affected villages in Vidarbha," he added.

Indian farmers take backseat as parties pitch for votes

WHILE the development issue is perhaps the most important plank for the 2014 elections in India, the farming population and the plight of the agrarian community seem to be getting little attention despite 53 per cent of the country 1.2 billion population being dependent on agriculture and allied activities. Experts and activists feel politicians and parties give lip service to farmers and their issues but are not serious about addressing their concerns. “Farmers and their issues have been ignored for long and systematically,” P V Rajagopal, President of Ekta Parishad, an activists’ movement focussing on land rights, said over phone from Jharkhand. Rajagopal, who had led a march of nearly 100,000 to Delhi in 2012 demanding a land reform policy, said land is being taken away from farmers. “The blanket mentality has been that industrialisation is the only way to growth and development. Hence, to make land available for industry, and urbanisation, they (politicians) do not want to speak about the issues of farmers,” said the activist.

Farmers to turn a new leaf in Madurai

MADURAI: Organic farming veteran Nammalvar may have died, but not his ideologies. Environmentalists attached to various organisations are coming together in order to promote organic farming. While organic farming in Madurai is in dire straits, as not even one percent of the total cultivation is done using such method, environmentalists and activists have started the 'iyarkai velan sutram' (organic farming relatives). The recently launched group conducted a two-day programme to educate a group of farmers in organic farming. The 25 farmers, most of them from Madurai district learnt the importance of organic farming, especially on carrying out agricultural activities in the most friendly way. Pamayan, a renowned environmentalist in the part of the state, also the chief consultant of the group, engaged the farmers. While the first day was filled with theory classes, the second day was full of field experience. Except for couple of farmers, others were using chemical fertilisers and pesticides. The camp was carried out in an organic farm in Narasingampatti, 20 km away from Madurai.

India warned of severe food, water shortage by UN panel

The UN panel on climate change warned on Monday that famine, water shortage and increased regional tension could plague south Asia, especially India, if corrective steps weren’t taken soon to curb greenhouse gas emissions.


The alarmist report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) was released on Monday, at Yokohama in Japan, and focuses on the global impact climate change would have on agriculture, water supply and society.


“Nobody on this planet is going to be untouched by the impacts of climate change,” IPCC chair Rajendra Pachauri said at the report’s release.

India to set up vocational institute in Libya

Tripoli (Libya) : India will set up a vocational training institute and agricultural research labs in Libya to help the north African nation develop its human resource, Indian ambassador here Anil Trigunayat has said.


"We want Libya to develop its own human resource. Hence India has offered to set up a vocational training institute and even agricultural research labs as a gift from the people of India. We hope this will happen soon," Trigunayat said.


Also, the Indian Institute of Foreign Trade will conduct a training programme in April-end in collaboration with the Libyan ministry of economy to impart training to Libyan managers, traders and exporters, especially in the small and medium enterprises, he said.
