Sky Platform introduce new organic fertilizer in Ghana

An organic fertilizer was on Wednesday launched in Accra to ensure food security, good health, and safe environment and usher Ghana into a second green revolution.

The introduction of the fertilizer on the Ghanaian market is to complement the effort of government and other players in the Agriculture sector in ensuring food security within sustainable limits.

The Organic fertiliser or manure are totally bio available and are capable of supplying all major micro-nutrient in readily absorbable form for all agriculture crops with lower dosage.

The launch was made possible by Sky Platform limited, in partnership with the Global Environmental Facility (GEF), the Small Grants Programme, the UNDP Ghana and Prathista of India.

Uganda International lands 5 million sponsorship from Sameer Agriculture

Fifteen countries have confirmed their Uganda International Badminton championships that swings into action February 20-23 at Lugogo Indoor Stadium in Kampala, Uganda.

The International Badminton ranking tournament landed a five million sponsorship from Sameer Agriculture and Livestock Limited this morning at their head offices in Industrial Area.

"This a great gesture by Sameer who have been our sponsors for the last three year's this year's event is bigger than last year with 15 nations confirming their participation," Simon Mugabi, the tournament director said at the the unveiling. "We expect over 66 international players who are all fighting to get ranking points ahead of Rio de Janeiro, Summer Olympic games in Brazil."

Agriculture ministry mulls drones to combat fish poachers

THE agriculture and Fisheries Ministry is considering using drones to man the country's fisheries resources and combat illegal fishing by foreign poachers.

"We are now in the process of looking at drones to deal with policing our fish resources because we are losing millions of dollars each year to foreign poachers when those catches should be here to feed our people, to export, and to make money," Agriculture Minister Roger Clarke told guests at the launch of the Rainforest Seafoods Festival on Tuesday at the company's Slipe Road complex in Kingston.

Drones are unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVS) either controlled by pilots from the ground or increasingly, autonomously, following a pre-programmed mission. Low-cost UAVs can be specially designed and equipped with sensors able to detect and locate poachers.

Sustainable agri and GM crop cultivation way forward, says van Montagu

Only sustainable agriculture and the cultivation of genetically-modified (GM) crops could save farmlands, as stated by Marc Van Montagu, founder and chairman, Institute of Plant Biotechnology Outreach, Belgium.  

He added that that was where biotechnology was seen as providing a viable pragmatic shift to allow a smooth transition from chemical-intensive agriculture to sustainable GM crop farming.

Van Montagu, who is a Nobel Laureate, delivered the keynote address at the dedicated track on agri-biotech at the fourteenth essay of the Bangalore India Bio, during which he remarked that the planet would mostly be covered with GM crop farms in the 21st century.   

“It will not just be resourceful for farmers, but for the population too, as it could help control hunger, poverty and malnutrition. There is a need to use science and technology to ensure better and safer agriculture,” he added.

India seeks new areas of cooperation in North Africa

New Delhi : Moving beyond phosphates and oil, India is looking at new areas of cooperation like agriculture, manufacturing, pharmaceuticals and textiles in its ties with North African countries.

The visits last month by External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid to Morocco, Tunisia - the first by an Indian foreign minister - and Sudan were aimed at "seizing the new opportunities" in the countries and to "invest strategically in bilateral ties", said a source.

The effort was to identify new areas of cooperation in the economic sector in the Maghreb nations. Investing in the pharmaceutical sector in the African region is a promising proposition with India also exploring the scope for manufacturing and export. North Africa could be a springboard to the European markets.

Renewable energy is another sector of cooperation that India is seeking out in the region.

In the field of agriculture, India is exploring area of cooperation in drip technology among other things.

Change view on farming to motivate youth to join

In a interview with HT here on Tuesday, Indian Council of Agriculture Research (ICAR) director general  and department of agricultural research and education (DARE) secretary  Dr S Ayyappan, said that agriculture was the only flourishing sector growing at a rate of more than 4% despite the present economic conditions.

"Farming, in the present scenario, is highly skilled profession which assures economic stability to the investors by the means of diversification," said the expert. Agricultural innovations, he said, are attracting people from various non-allied sectors and various central and state government agencies are now encouraging the youth to join the research conducted in the sector and to adopt new-age profit making farming.

Recently, software professionals in Bengaluru and Himachal Pradesh switched over the highly lucrative horticulture farming practiced in the polyhouses. "There is a change in the agricultural trends in almost every state where youngsters now make the best use of easily the latest technology and expertise for remunerative farming. But there is a need to highlight such success stories to motivate the youth," said Ayyappan, who was at the National Dairy Research Institute (NDRI) to deliver a lecture at Dr S Sundaresan Memorial Lecture.

Dutch help for Bengal farms

Calcutta, Feb. 12: The Netherlands is willing to create a “centre of excellence” to tap opportunities in the agriculture and horticulture sectors in Bengal.

“We want to disseminate Dutch expertise and technology through this centre and bring into its ambit sectors such as horticulture, meat processing, food processing and floriculture. A feasibility study would be first conducted to identify verticals,” Alphonsus Stoelinga, ambassador of the Netherlands to India, said.

The ambassador, on his maiden trip to Calcutta after taking over more than a year ago, met Bengal industry secretary C.M. Bachhawat and agriculture secretary Subrata Biswas in the morning.

India's urban work boom is leaving women behind

Nearly 400 million people live in cities in India and during the next 40 years that number will more than double. Not only is the proportion of India’s total female population that is economically active is among the lowest in the world, but urban areas do even worse. Data from the 2011 census shows only half as many urban women work as their rural counterparts.Few states – including Iran, Pakistan and Saudi Arabia – do worse than India when it comes to women’s participation in the workforce. Others such as Somalia, Bahrain and Malaysia do much better.

 Among the BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) which are comparable emerging economies, India has the lowest female participation rate, with only 29% of women over the age of 15 working. As the chart below shows, even among the MINT countries – Mexico, Nigeria, Indonesia and Turkey – only Turkey has the same participation rate as India.In mainly agricultural economies, urban women often find less work than rural ones. Half the working population in India is employed by the agricultural sector. But agriculture’s contribution to Indian economy has been steadily falling and is now less than half that of the services industry. This should have corresponded with rapid growth in numbers of working women in cities, but that hasn’t happened.Economists have tried to understand this discrepancy.

Giving agriculture its due

During the event, the Punjab government will honour three farmers from each state and three farmers from each district of Punjab for adopting alternative and innovative farming practices. Fifty eminent personalities in the field of agriculture and allied sector would also be honoured.

Punjab state farmers’ commission chairman Dr GS Kalkat, the man behind the summit, told HT that international experts would discuss the problems of the green revolution states, especially Punjab. “I hope something tangible would come out of the discussions. There is no agenda for the summit,” he revealed.

“Nearly 92 million out of 138 million land holders have less than one acre of land in the country and their condition is pitiable. Due to the prevailing agrarian crisis, they are neither farmers nor labourers. So something serious needs to be done,” suggested Dr Kalkat.

At a reception, I met the head of Indian operations for Esso (now ExxonMobil). When I asked him how business was, he said it was great. But he complained to me that he could no longer get good core samples: the soil was so dry it crumbled and fell out of his auger as he withdrew it.

Agriculture minister Sharad Pawar has his way on sugar export subsidy

NEW DELHI: Agriculture minister Sharad Pawar prevailed upon the food ministry to push subsidy for export of sugar by private manufacturers at a price closer to what he had originally proposed. The Cabinet committee on economic affairs (CCEA) on Wednesday approved Rs 3,333 as subsidy for exporting every tonne of raw sugar.

While food minister K V Thomas had initially proposed the subsidy at Rs 2,000 per tonne, Pawar wanted it fixed at Rs 3,500 to make exports viable for Indian sugar millers.

The decision came a day after a CCEA meeting on Tuesday evening saw some fireworks between Thomas and Pawar, sources said. It is learnt that while an informal group of ministers headed by Pawar had agreed to recommend Rs 3,500 subsidy per tonne to the Cabinet for approval, the food ministry's proposal was nowhere near that.

Food minister calls agriculture minister ‘backstabber’

NEW DELHI: Food minister K V Thomas has called agriculture minister Sharad Pawar a backstabber for raising a banner of "revolt" against Congress president Sonia Gandhi in 1999 on the issue of her foreign origin. 

Thomas, who has been at odds with Pawar on issues like food security, made the accusation against the Maratha strongman in his book 'Sonia, the beloved of masses' while narrating events at a stormy Congress Working Committee (CWC) meet. 

Devoting a separate five-page chapter titled 'Backstabbing' in the 110-page book, a reference is made to how Gandhi's foreign birth issue was raised by Pawar, P A Sangma and Tariq Anwar. The trio later went on to form a separate party--Nationalist Congress Party (NCP).
