The 21st Century will be the century of India, Asia and Africa - the India-Africa partnership is “distinct and different,” exemplifying the spirit of South-South Cooperation,” he said.

U.S. Senate Warns Europeans to Stop Food Fight Over Dairy Names

A bipartisan majority of the U.S. Senate weighed in this week on the importance of rejecting European Union efforts to restrict the use of common food names, including a variety of popular, well-known cheeses, used by U.S. dairy producers and companies.


In a letter to U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) Michael Froman and U.S. Agriculture Secretary (USDA) Tom Vilsack, over 50 U.S. senators urged the U.S. government to fight back against EU efforts to restrict how U.S. companies market cheese and other foods. Under the guise of protecting European geographical indications (GIs), EU has been using free trade agreements to prevent cheese makers in the United States and around the world from using common food names such as parmesan, feta, havarti, muenster and others.

Exotic plant species alter ecosystem productivity

In their joint publication in the journal Ecology Letters German and American biologists have reported an increase in biomass production in ecosystems colonised by non-native plant species. In the face of climate change, these and other changes to ecosystems are predicted to become more frequent, according to the researchers.


All over the world, plant and animal species are increasingly encroaching upon ecosystems where they don't belong as a result of human influence. This phenomenon is known as a biological invasion. Observational studies on biological invasions show that the invasion of non-native plant species can alter ecosystems. One important aspect of this is biomass production: compared to intact ecosystems, the productivity of ecosystems with non-native species is considerably higher. "In such purely observational studies however, it is not possible to differentiate between cause and effect," says Dr. Harald Auge from the Helmholtz Center for Environmental Research (UFZ). "The question is whether exotic plant species prefer to colonise more productive ecosystems, or whether increased productivity is a result of the invasion."

China ranks second in agri-insurance market after US

China’s agricultural insurance covered 73 million hectares of crops in 2013, which is 45% of the total planting acreage


China Insurance Regulatory Commission today said that the country has emerged as the world’s second largest agricultural insurance market after the US with a compensation payment of $3.4 billion.


China’s agricultural insurance covered 73 million hectares of crops in 2013, which is 45% of the total planting acreage.


The agricultural insurance scheme paid $3.4 billion in compensation and benefited 33.67 million rural households last year.

Hailstorms caused Rs 13,000 crore loss for farmers in MP: Shivraj Singh Chouhan

BHOPAL: Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan today said unseasonal rains and hailstorm caused extensive damage to crops in Madhya Pradesh with the farmers suffering a loss of about Rs 13,000 crore as per the reports receiving from various districts. 


"The farmers have suffered an extensive damage to their crops due to unseasonal rains and hailstorm which is going on even now resulting in a crop loss of about Rs 13,000 crore," Chouhan told reporters. 


"Because of the natural calamity, the state's total production of Rabi crop is going to decline by 10 per cent," Agriculture Principal Secretary Rajesh Rajora said.

Wheat output may fall below government estimate

NEW DELHI: Wheat output this year is likely to be below the government estimate of 95.60 million tonnes as untimely rain, hailstorm and wind have hit the crop in some states, a government official said. 


"Wheat crop has been affected in three states - Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Maharashtra because of rain, hailstorm and wind, Agriculture Commissioner J S Sandhu told PTI. 


Untimely rain is due to western disturbances in and around the coast of Gujarat and this situation is likely to continue for some more days as forecast by the Met Department. "Definitely there is some damage. Production would be below the current estimate. It is difficult to say the extent of damage as the government is still assessing," he said. Sandhu said wheat crop, which is ready for harvesting, has been covered in additional 61,000 hectares in the ongoing 2013-14 crop year (July-June).

Most farmers aware of MGNREGA scheme, but not MSP: Study

NEW DELHI: Most farmers in India are aware of MGNREGA scheme but not about the minimum support price (MSP) for crops fixed by the Centre to avoid distress sale, according to a study by research body CSDS. 


Also, 76 per cent of farmers surveyed prefer to do some other work rather than farming, while 60 per cent of them want their children to migrate to cities, the Centre for the Study of Developing Societies (CSDS) said in a survey that covered over 5,000 farmer households in 18 states. 


The CSDS study, conducted on behalf of farmers body Bharat Krishak Samaj (BKS), said: "Approximately, 85 per cent of farmers have heard about MGNREGA. ...Approximately 62 per cent were not aware about the MSP." However, 51 per cent of those who knew about MGNREGA said that they did not get work under this scheme, while 64 per cent of farmers who were aware of MSP were not satisfied with the price fixed by the government, it said.
