Estenson hopes to simplify regulations in agriculture industry

North Dakota Agriculture Commissioner Doug Goehring will have an intra-party challenger for the 2014 election as Judy Estenson announced her candidacy in early February.

Estenson, who will run as a Republican, grew up in Valley City, N.D. and has operated a livestock and grain farm with her husband, Hal Estenson, in Benson County since their marriage in 1979.

“My father (LeVern Bjerke) was a farm boy until he moved us to Valley City to be an insurance salesman,” said Estenson. “Though he was a business man, he loved horses, so we always had animals.”

Iran seeks European investment in agriculture sector

TEHRAN – Iran will be seeking investment by European companies in its agriculture sector, as the country’s agriculture minister will attend the 32nd FAO Regional Conference for the Near East, due from February 24th to 28th in Rome.

Iranian agriculture minister Mahmoud Hojjati will introduce the country’s potentials to European, especially to Italian companies, in agriculture and food industries, IRNA reported on Sunday.

In January, Behrouz Alishiri, the head of Iran’s Organization for Investment and Economic and Technical Assistance, said foreign investors are eager to increase investment in the Islamic Republic following Tehran’s recent nuclear deal with world powers.

Kwara State Governor, Dr Abdulfatah Ahmed, has said that Nigeria can survive without oil revenue if agricultural practice is transformed into agribusiness, especially in view of the nation's current food import bill and export receipts.

Governor Ahmed said this in a lecture he delivered at the inauguration of New Leadership and Public Lecture organised by the Arewa Consultative Forum, entitled: “Northern Nigeria Economy free of Oil Revenue” held at the Musa Yar’Adua Indoor Sports Hall in Kaduna.

He said the pursuit of an agriculture based economy should be premised on good governance, growth of the right institutions that would engender the implementation of appropriate policies as well as promotion of equity and respect for rule of law.

Farmers Need Facilitating, Not Spoon-feeding

There is good news from the agriculture front. Over the last 10 years, the food grain output rose from 213.19 metric tonnes (MT) to 263.2MT. During the period, production of pulses and oilseeds also increased from 15 and 25MT to 20 and 33MT respectively. The value of agricultural exports has also soared from $7.5 billion to $45 billion. Tractor sales have trebled to 5.5 lakh units and rural poverty has declined faster than urban poverty. All this shows that the agriculture sector has been steadily growing despite the slackness noticed during a 10-year period earlier. But the government has little to take credit for the achievement which has more to do with market forces than its intervention.

The farmers should realise that the era of automatic price rise through government intervention is almost over with subsidies being phased out globally. India has been given five years’ time to phase out all such subsidies so that it complies with the provisions of the WTO under the  general agreement on trade and tariff (GATT). They have to face the realities of global trade and reap benefits. Also, they must be prepared to face the consequences of fluctuations in global demand and supply.

Punjab chief minister Badal urges Centre to present agriculture Budget

Punjab chief minister Parkash Singh Badal urged the Centre to present a separate Budget for the agriculture like its presents the Railway Budget, as 55 per cent of India’s population was dependent on agriculture.

He made the statement during his keynote address at the Kisan Sammellan on the first day of the Progressive Punjab Agriculture Summit (PPAS) a four-day event that took place at New Vegetable and Fruit market and was organised by the government of Punjab. PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry and KPMG were its institutional partners.

Badal added that the Centre has ignored the agriculture sector, as a result of which over a lakh farmers in Punjab have quit farming in favour of other vocations in the last decade.

He said that the Centre needed to frame pro-farmer policies to motivate, else its discriminatory approach could endanger the country’s food security and create a major law and order problem, possibly even anarchy.

The chief minister bemoaned that the share of agriculture in the national income has also been falling, while the percentage of people dependent on agriculture has remained the same.

Monitoring agricultural practices

The state shall decide whether wheat shall be grown this year or paddy. The state shall decide how much area will be given for which crop. The state shall decide how much of the crop shall be allowed to come to the market and how much of that shall be destroyed to prevent distress sales.

The state shall also decide whether a particular agricultural area should be kept fallow or allowed to be cultivated. Sounds too Orwellian, as if the great ‘Big Brother ‘ is remote-controlling the agricultural choice of its farmers!

It would surprise many to know that even today countries like the USA and Europe decide the cropping pattern and the agricultural produce that goes to the market to a certain extent.

Pulses Association to appoint survey agency for correct crop estimate

MUMBAI: In view of divergent estimates on crop produce, the India Pulses and Grains Association has decided to appoint a survey agency for kharif and rabi crop for accurate figures, a senior industry official said here. 

"In view of difference between the government figures and trade figures over the pulses crop, we have decided to appoint crop survey agency for kharif and rabi crop to get more accurate crop estimate," India Pulses and Grains Association Chairman Pravin Dongre told PTI on the sidelines of a Pulses Conclave 2014 held in Goa recently. 

As per the government estimate, the country is expected to produce 19.8 million tonnes (MT) of pulses this year, which includes 9.8 MT of chana crop, while trade figures says only 6.5 MT of chana crop this year, Dongre said.

Farmers for policy review on Indian imports

LAHORE: Farmers have urged the government to study the consensus reached between Pakistani and Indian members’ views at the Pakistan-India Joint Business Forum (PIJBF) where Indian agreed that Pakistan should impose duties on Indian agriculture produce to the extent of subsidies provided.

“Farmers were not part of any trade negotiations that were taking place between India and Pakistan until they raised their voice last year,” said Tariq Bucha, the President of Farmers Associates Pakistan. He said two representatives of farmers were included in the PIJBF, along with manufacturing sector representatives, to recommend ways to both the governments to remove irritants in free trade between two countries.

Bucha said that according to Indian official statistics, the Indian government subsidises agriculture to the tune of $93 billion. But he said it had been estimated that they exceed $100 billion. He added that the Indian subsidy on diesel is one such concession that is availed by agriculture but is not agriculture-specific. “This amounts to Rs110 billion in Pakistani rupees,” he said. .....

New Delhi: Narendra Modi, the Bharatiya Janata Party’s prime ministerial candidate, said on Sunday that there is a need to boost manufacturing to revive the domestic economy.Modi said the three pillars to develop the country were that agriculture should have a one-third share of the nation’s gross domestic product (GDP), manufacturing sector should account for one-third and the services sector should account for the rest. The manufacturing sector contributes to 14% of GDP.“These are the three things that are needed to develop the country. We cannot let any of them go unattended,” Modi said at the hustings in Jagraon in Punjab. Modi had first started his public meetings from Punjab on 23 June last year after becoming the BJP’s chief poll campaigner.
