Onion prices rise 24% in a week

NASHIK: The average wholesale onion price at Lasalgaon Agriculture Produce Market Committee (APMC) has increased by 24.13% in the past week due to decline in supply.In the three APMCs in the district, the average onion prices, which were in the range of Rs 700 to Rs 725 a quintal on March 18, has increased to Rs 821 to Rs 900 a quintal on Tuesday. In the retail markets across the city, good quality onions were sold at Rs 12 to 15 a kg on Tuesday.An official from Lasalgaon APMC told TOI: "The daily arrival, which was around 19,000 quintals last week, has declined to 14,000 quintals a day because of the unseasonal rains and hailstorms that damaged the crop. It is difficult to say how much is the damage to the crop due to hailstorms, but the arrival has declined. The hailstorms have also affected the quality of onions. Only around half of the new arrivals are of good quality."

Government’s pre-poll sugar sop questioned at WTO

NEW DELHI: The government's pre-election bonanza for the sugar industry has been questioned at the World Trade Organization (WTO), making it the second farm subsidy to face global scrutiny in recent months. 

Australia, Colombia, Brazil and the European Union, along with others have raised several questions including the compatibility of latest set of sops with WTO rules, while some urging India to remove immediately what they described as export subsidies that will potentially impact world trade. The issue was raised at a meeting of WTO's agriculture committee on March 21, said a source familiar with the developments. 
Paraguay, Thailand, El Salvador, Canada, the US, Pakistan and New Zealand were the other countries that protested India's export subsidy for sugar meant to clear a glut.

Governor’s schools add agriculture, technology

Two new governor’s schools will be available for high school students this summer — the Governor’s School for the Agricultural Sciences and the Governor’s School for Engineering and Technology.

The agricultural school will be a four-week residential program housed at Penn State University and application forms can be downloaded from www.agsci.psu.edu/governors-school. The engineering and technology school will be a two-week residential program that will be located at Lehigh University with application forms downloaded at www.lehigh.edu/pgset

The new schools will join the Governor’s School for the Sciences, which will be held at Carnegie Mellon University. Application forms can be accessed at www-pgss.mcs.cmu.edu.

Weak monsoon may lead to another year of sub-5% growth for India

NEW DELHI: India could face yet another year of sub 5 per cent growth, if monsoon are below normal this year, a Citigroup report says. According to the global financial services major, India is likely to clock a GDP growth of 5.6 per cent in FY15, provided there is normal monsoon and agri growth. However, a "weak" or "bad" monsoon could lead to flattish or negative agri growth, lowering GDP to 5.1 per cent or 4.7 per cent, respectively, Citigroup said. "While admittedly trends in the SOI are volatile, given that a weak monsoon could result in yet another year of sub 5 per cent growth," the report added.
