International agricultural expo begins today

GUWAHATI: New opportunities await Assam's farmers when international experts and agriculturists assemble at the first-ever international agri-horticultural exhibition at the Khanapara veterinary college playground. The event, which will start on Wednesday, is expected to familiarize the state's farmers with the agricultural systems of China and Myanmar.

The show has been organized by the state's directorate of horticulture and food processing, department of agriculture and the Assam Agricultural University, with the support of the Indian Chamber of Commerce (ICC) and the Assam Horticultural Society. It will also focus on helping local farmers and promoting their produce.

Recent dip in temperature and unseasonal rains leave standing crops vulnerable

NEW DELHI: Farmers are being advised to protect standing potato, wheat and masur crop from weather vagaries. A dip in temperature and rains have resulted in pest and fungal infestations at some places across the northern and western India.  Reports of yellow rust on wheat fields have been reported across the north Indian states. "We have detected yellow rust in wheat fields of Punjab, Haryana and Jammu," said Indu Sharma, head of the Directorate of Wheat Research, Karnal.  The environmental condition remains conducive for further spread as it has occurred early in the season said the scientist. "We are advising farmers to monitor their crops and identify yellow rust wherein yellow powdery mass appears on the leaves and adheres to the fingers when touched," she said adding that fungicides should be sprayed immediately.

Bihar agricultural growth charms Afghanistan farmers

Agriculture scientist Ajay Kumar Parida happy with Padma Shri

Agricultural scientist Ajay Kumar Parida Sunday said he was "professionally and personally" satisfied with the Padma Shri awarded to him.

"The award is professionally and personally satisfying. It is one of the highest recognitions that India bestows," the 50-year-old said.

A cytogenetist and molecular biologist by training, Parida is from Odisha. He is the executive director at the city-based M.S. Swaminathan Research Foundation.

Over 11% decline registered in people engaged in agriculture

The number of people employed in agriculture sector have declined from about 261 million in 2009-10 to 231 million as of 2011-12, highlighted the ASSOCHAM study.The number of people dependent upon agriculture and allied activities for their livelihood has come down from over 60 per cent to 49 per cent during the last decade i.e. between 1999-2000 and 2011-12, signaling a prominent shift in the rural job profile with significant reduction in proportion of workers engaged in agriculture and an increase in secondary and tertiary sectors, self-employment and in regular work, according to a recently concluded ASSOCHAM study. “The number of people employed in secondary and tertiary sectors have grown significantly from about 16 per cent and 23.5 per cent in 1999-00 to about 24 per cent and 27 per cent respectively as of 2011-12,” according to a study titled ‘Structural Shift in Rural Employment’ conducted by The Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (ASSOCHAM).

Agriculture: ‘Research collaboration could help ensure food security’

Nepal could increase its agricultural productivity with help from experts from Pakistan, Nepal’s Ambassador to Pakistan Bharat Raj Paudyal said on Friday.

He was speaking at a Deans’ Committee meeting at the University of Agriculture Faisalabad. Vice Chancellor Iqrar Ahmad Khan, Deputy Chief of Mission Tirtha Raj Aryal and the ambassador’s wife Totra Kumari Achaya were also present on the occasion.
The ambassador said Nepal and Pakistan had similar cultures. Collaboration would open a new chapter of progress for both countries, he said. “Universities play a pivotal role for social and economic uplift.”
