Public Consultation on Draft Aquaculture Standards Now Open

BRAZIL - Until 18 March, any citizen may make suggestions and propose changes in four projects aimed at aquaculture standards.

Organized by the Brazilian Association of Technical Standards (ABNT), these documents were drafted by experts in the field and aim to create a seal of quality for producers of tilapia, tambaqui and bivalve molluscs.

"Adherence to standards will be voluntary, but will certify that the producer meets the standards established by ABNT and can be used as a differential quality of their product," explained researcher Patricia Maciel, Embrapa Fisheries and Aquaculture (Palmas, TO), who participated in drafting the document that guides the fattening of tambaqui.

Alaska Fish Factor: Seafood Free of Radiation Following Fukushima

US - Alaska seafood is free of radiation stemming from Japan’s 2011 tsunami and Fukushima nuclear reactor disaster.

That was the take home message from the Alaska Dept. of Conservation to the state Senate Resources Committee at a recent hearing.

Citing information from the Environmental Protection Agency, the Food and Drug Administration and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, the Pacific states including Hawaii, California, Oregon and Washington, as well as Health Canada, “all have demonstrated there are no levels of radiation that are of a public health concern,” said Marty Brewer, director of DEC’s Environmental Health Division of.

She added that only small amounts of radiation have been detected from the reactor source.

“There has been detection of cesium that is reportedly from Fukushima but at miniscule levels,” Brewer said.

DEC Commissioner Larry Hartig said programs in the Lower 48 are testing fish that swim between the Gulf of Alaska, the West Coast and Japan, and they have come up with a clean bill of health. The DEC also is monitoring marine debris washing ashore in Southeast Alaska and Prince William Sound, Hartig said.

India no more depends on import of wheat and cotton

The country earned foreign exchange worth Rs 2.32 lakh crore by exporting wheat and cotton to foreign countries, Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar has said.

He was speaking at a function here last evening to inaugurate the Late Padmashri Bhausaheb Vartak and Indutai Vartak Vishramdham constructed at a cost of Rs 2 crore at Kelve in Palghar taluka.

The Vishramdham has been constructed by the Somavanshi Kshatriya Mahasangh to commemorate the birth centenary of Late Bhausaheb Vartak a visionary and social worker from Thane district.

President opens India's biggest ever farm exposition

Krishi Vasant, the biggest ever farm exposition so far, was inaugurated by President Pranab Mukherjee in a glittering ceremony held at Central Cotton Research Institute, Nagpur in Maharashtra today.

The exposition is being organized jointly by the Government of India and Government of Maharashtra along with CII, the strategic partner representing Indian industry.

More than 220 farmers from the State led by Agriculture Minister Md Abdul Nasir and Director of State Agricultural Management & Extension Training Institute (SAMETI) Mayanglambam Gojendro are taking part in the exposition.

'India may produce record 263.2 MT foodgrains this year'

Foodgrain prouction is likely to touch a record 263.2 million tonnes (mt) this year, beating the previous high of 259 mt achieved two years ago, Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawarsaid today.

"The country is likely to achieve record 263.2 mt foodgrain production this year. This would be about 4 mt higher than the record of 259 million tonnes achieved two years ago," Pawar said at an agricultural exposition here.

The foodgrain production fell marginally to 255.36 mt in the last crop year (July-June) due to drought in some parts of the country.

A good monsoon along with improved sowing of both kharif (summer) and rabi (winter) crops have improved prospects of a better foodgrain production this year.

India has now emerged as the world's top rice exporter and second-top exporter of wheat and cotton. The country is also the top producer of milk and horticultural crops, Pawar said highlighting progress made in the farm sector. The Central Statistics Office (CSO), in its recently-released advanced estimates for the current fiscal, has projected 4.6 per cent growth in agriculture and allied sectors, up from 1.4 per cent a year earlier. ....

President Pranab praises farmers for freeing country of food shortage

NAGPUR: The humble Indian farmer living in penury and hardship, braving fickle weather got his due on Sunday when his contribution in bailing out the country from perennial food shortage came in for generous praise. President Pranab Mukherjee said this feat would not have been possible without the farmers' hard work. "From net importers of foodgrains five years ago, today we are major exporters of rice, wheat, fruits, cotton and sugar relieving the strain on economy."

Praising the UPA government's performance in the last 10 years, he said the annual growth of 7.9% was achieved because of huge contribution from agriculture sector during 2003 to 2013 period. He also praised Union agriculture minister Sharad Pawar for giving "new dimension and direction to agriculture in the last ten years."

Inaugurating the five-day biggest-ever agriculture exposition "Krishi Vasant', here, on Sunday, Mukherjee said the country has emerged as the world's top exporter of rice and second largest exporter of wheat, sugar and cotton. "Till recent times, every finance minister had to worry about rising import bills of food, fertilizers and fuel. We had to beg for wheat from counties like US, Canada and Australia. Today, we export wheat."

Sudan seeks India help to boost agriculture sector

Sudan today sought India's help in the use of alternative energy in irrigation to boost its agriculture sector.External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid held talks with his Sudanese counterpart Ali Ahmed Karti, who sought help in building the agricultural sector of his country."The minister reminded me that it is important that India should assist... with alternative energy, solar energy" to allow ground water to be used for agriculture in areas where water is scarce, Khurshid said."We would certainly look at applications of sprinkler irrigation, applications of drip irrigation, that India has improved and perfected," he said."There's a lot more that we can do together," Khurshid said after he arrived here on the final leg of his three-nation tour of Morocco, Tunisia and Sudan.Khurshid and Karti sought to firm up political and economic ties with bilateral trade set to touch USD 1 billion mark this year.

Prospects for Agriculture continue to be optimistic for 2014

Sierra Leone’s agricultural sector is starting the new year 2014 in an optimistic mood, with an upward trend in empowering both large and small scale farmers for sustainable economic growth. The Minister, Dr. Joseph Sam Sesay, disclosed to this writer during his recent participation at the Global Forum for Food and Agriculture (GFFA), held during the International Green Week in Berlin, Germany. According to the Minister, the investment is a joint venture between four Chinese companies and the Sierra Leone government. It will cultivate 100,000 hectares of rubber, 35,000 hectares of irrigated large scale rice production in Moyamba, Tonkolili and Port Loko district respectively.

The project will be implemented by both small and large scale farmers in an effort to ensure that production of raw materials is done not only by large investment companies but also enables local farmers to undertake improved food production, processing and marketing activities across the country.

Agriculture Ministry helping food exporters improve operations

MONTEGO BAY, Jamaica (JIS) -- The Ministry of Agriculture says it has so far disbursed more than J$10 million to exporters in grants to assist in improving operations to meet the requirements of the United States Food Safety Modernisation Act (FSMA).

Following a tour of two export facilities in Western Jamaica on Friday (February 7) Agriculture Minister, Roger Clarke said he was “very pleased with the improvements by local exporters”.
Clarke noted that the programme was achieving its objectives, with 11 operations already benefitting from the assistance and 20 expected during the course of the year.

“Our commitment is to do whatever we can to make sure that we achieve the food safety standards necessary not only for exports, but to make our people aware of what food safety means, and we are well on our way. I think we have some very cooperative people working with and I think we will achieve what we have set out to achieve,” Clarke said.
