Symbiotic Fungi Inhabiting Plant Roots Have Major Impact On Atmospheric Carbon, Scientists Say

Microscopic fungi that live in plants' roots play a major role in the storage and release of carbon from the soil into the atmosphere, according to a University of Texas at Austin researcher and his colleagues at Boston University and the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute. The role of these fungi is currently unaccounted for in global climate models. Some types of symbiotic fungi can lead to 70 percent more carbon stored in the soil."Natural fluxes of carbon between the land and atmosphere are enormous and play a crucial role in regulating the concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and, in turn, Earth's climate," said Colin Averill, lead author on the study and graduate student in the College of Natural Sciences at UT Austin. "This analysis clearly establishes that the different types of symbiotic fungi that colonize plant roots exert major control on the global carbon cycle, which has not been fully appreciated or demonstrated until now."

Ancient Forests Stabilized Earth’s CO2 and Climate

UK researchers have identified a biological mechanism that could explain how the Earth’s atmospheric carbon dioxide and climate were stabilised over the past 24 million years. When CO2 levels became too low for plants to grow properly, forests appear to have kept the climate in check by slowing down the removal of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. The results are now published in Biogeosciences, an open access journal of the European Geosciences Union (EGU).“As CO2 concentrations in the atmosphere fall, the Earth loses its greenhouse effect, which can lead to glacial conditions,” explains lead-author Joe Quirk from the University of Sheffield. “Over the last 24 million years, the geologic conditions were such that atmospheric CO2 could have fallen to very low levels – but it did not drop below a minimum concentration of about 180 to 200 parts per million

GoM okays incentives for raw sugar export

An informal group of ministers (GoM), headed by Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar, has approved incentives to the beleaguered sugar industry for exports of up to 40 lakh tonnes of raw sugar for two years. The PM-constituted panel was set up to address the financial problems being faced by the sugar industry. In line with the panel's recommendations, the Centre has already announced interest subsidy on bank loans to be availed by sugar mills for paying cane farmers."We have decided to give incentives to promote raw sugar as a new product. Incentives will be given for export of up to 40 lakh tonnes for two seasons," Food Minister KV Thomas told reporters after the meeting. The quantum of incentives would be worked out soon, taking inputs from the Finance Ministry, he said. This proposal may come for discussion in the next Cabinet meeting, the minister added.Thomas said the policy of incentives is compatible with World Trade Organisation's (WTO) norms and would be reviewed constantly.

Vilsack sees farm bill finish line

One of those difficult issues is the bill's inclusion of a strict payment limit of $250,000 per farm couple for commodity programs. It would allow just one off-farm investor in a farm to claim to be "actively engaged" to receive a payment. That loophole has allowed multiple partners in large farms in some southern states to avoid previous limits in farm bills, according to a government accountability office (GAO) study requested by Senator Chuck Grassley, the reform's most vocal proponent. Strong payment limits have the support of majorities in both the House and Senate, but not on the House Agriculture Committee. Grassley has said that the three of the four House and Senate ag committee leaders have been trying to convince Senate Agriculture Committee Chairwoman Debbie Stabenow that the payment limit provision in the farm bill should be weakened.

Pathogenic Plant Virus Jumps to Honeybees, May Explain Bee Population Decline

A viral pathogen that typically infects plants has been found in honeybees and could help explain their decline. Researchers working in the U.S. and Beijing, China report their findings in mBio, the online open-access journal of the American Society for Microbiology.
