The Australian Government will boost the Tasmanian aquaculture industry through the Tasmanian Jobs and Growth Plan.
"Today I am pleased to announce that AUD 3.5 million (USD 3.1 million) in funding has been secured for the Huon Aquaculture Value Added Processing Facility project," the Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development, Jamie Briggs, said.
The project will provide the equipment to process fresh fish, as well as smokehouses and other machinery for boning, skinning, portioning and mincing.
It will also extend the existing factory building, car park and effluent treatment facilities.
Aquaculture is Australia's fastest growing primary industry, accounting for 34 per cent of the total gross value of seafood production.
The facility will support Tasmania's contribution to this vital industry by producing 100 per cent grown and processed salmon.
It will also benefit the local community, with 100 jobs created during the construction stage and 60 new full-time positions in the first year of operation.
