Shamanna donates Rs 25,000 to AAP candidate

BANGALORE: Noted farmers' leader and Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha member Kadiadal Shamanna, who is also a senior leader in the farmers' movement in Karnataka, donated Rs 25,000 to Aam Aadmi Party candidate Sridhar Kallahalla, who is contesting from Shimoga parliamentary constituency, to meet his poll expenses. Sridhar, who has filed his papers without any fanfare along with his supporters, said that the gesture strengthens the efforts of AAP in propagating a clean, transparent and people-centric governance.

2014 farm output at risk, CPI to spike again

India's hope rally appears to be at risk. Even if a reformist government comes to power in May, global weather forecasts seem to suggest that it will be faced with the prospect of a weak agriculture output and rise in food prices. For starters, the recent hailstorm is expected to affect output in the current year. The Street has already begun factoring in lower GDP growth for this reason. Also food prices, which dipped in February, may spike again. Bank of America Merrill Lynch's Jyotivardhan Jaipuria and Indranil Sen Gupta say: "The hailstorm could likely result in an estimated crop failure at about Rs 12,000 crore (0.1% of the full year GDP)." However, for the quarter, this would be 0.4% of the GDP (4.8% BofAML estimated base case) and 2-2.5% of the agri-growth (forecast is 3.5%). Added to this, the risks of an El Nino like situation are also building.

Punjab orders fresh survey of farm suicide-hit families

BATHINDA: After remaining in a state of denial all these years, political constraints have nudged the SAD-BJP alliance government into a position of acknowledging the harsh reality of farmer suicides in the state. The shift has come after protests by farmer and labourer organizations, with some declaring their resolve to oppose SAD candidates in the Lok Sabha elections. The state government has asked three universities of the state -- Punjab Agriculture University, Punjabi University and Guru Nanak Dev University -- to undertake a fresh survey of suicide-hit farm families. In their earlier surveys, the varsities had identified about 6,900 families whose members committed between 2000 and 2011. However, the government had excluded 2,200 families, citing suicides due to reasons other than farm debt. Besides, the state has only recently provided Rs 64 crore to the families of suicide victims.

Cotton crop faces water scarcity during plantation

LONDON: More than half of cotton crop is grown in regions with high water risks, according to the WWF International. The expanded Water Risk Filter, started in 2012, now covers 122 commodities from almonds to cocoa and sugar and the countries where they are grown and shows historical instances of drought, pollution and "water footprint" in each area. Climate change, population growth, rising food demand and changing consumption patterns are increasing pressure on freshwater resources, according to WWF."Cotton is one of the thirstiest crops, it requires a lot of water and it's one of the most polluting crops given the high demand for fertilizers and pesticides," Jochem Verberne, head of corporate relations at WWF International, said by phone on Friday from Amsterdam

Yarn exports to China plummet on pricing policy

KOLKATA: Indian yarn exports have come under pressure as China has slowed down yarn imports from the country. The dragon country is also offering a lower price for Indian yarn on ground that rupee has strengthened against dollar. Chinese price for Indian yarn has declined by 6 per cent to 7per cent over the past one month and is now quoting at $3.30 a kg."Till January, Chinese demand was in full swing. But from February onwards, the Chinese offtake started declining and in March we are seeing a distinct difference in their imports," said T Rajkumar, chairman, Southern India Mills' Association (SIMA). China, till January, was lifting about 110 -120 million kg yarn per month on an average.

Farmers driven to suicide as hail ruins crops

Unseasonal rains and hailstorms this month have damaged the winter-sown crops of millions of Indian farmers, but Rekha Garole lost more than others.


Her 42-year-old husband Santuka killed himself this month after hail devastated the wheat and chickpea crops that they had been counting on to repay a bank loan of 90,000 rupees.


"He committed suicide to escape his debt burden," says Rekha, who met nearly a dozen political leaders in a week at her mud house in the Nanded district of Maharashtra but has yet to receive any financial aid.


Santuka, like other farmers in his village of Golegaon, prayed last year for bountiful rains to end two years of drought in the region.

West spreading El Nino rumours: India Meteorological Department

NEW DELHI: Weather scientists from Australia to the US are seeing ominous signs of a 'monster El Nino' that heightens the risk of a drought in South Asia this year, but India's weather office is snarling at these forecasters and accusing them of conspiring to rattle the country's commodities and stock markets.El Nino, or 'little boy' in Spanish, refers to changes in the direction of winds and the flow of warm water currents that raise the surface temperature of parts of the Pacific Ocean. It shakes up global rainfall and storm activity, causing droughts and floods in different parts of the world. In India, it coincided with droughts in 2002, 2004 and the driest monsoon in four decades in 2009, which inflated food prices sharply and launched a stubborn bout of inflation that prompted the central bank to tighten monetary policy and encouraged a clampdown on farm exports despite bulging stocks.
