India Agriculture Minister Wants Urgent Strengthening of Procurement Machinery

Agriculture sector opposes granting NDMA/MFN status to India

The Agriculture Task Force (ATF) of Pakistan-India Joint Business Forum (PIJBF) is vehemently opposed to granting Non-Discriminatory Market Access/Most Favoured Nation (NDMA/MFN) to India at this stage. President, Farmers Associates Pakistan (FAP) and Co-Chair of Agriculture Task force, PIJBF, Tariq Bucha in a letter sent to the federal commerce minister has highlighted that agriculture sector, which is by far the biggest employer in the country, categorically opposes granting NDMA/MFN to India till proper preparations are completed on our side to protect our sectors from enormous Indian subsidies, and get significant market access from India for Pakistani goods, to ensure the level playing field as per the requirement laid down in the cabinet decision of February 29, 2012. Unnecessary haste with which the government of Pakistan is proceeding to open Wagah border and to more than 137 items before India lowers its agriculture tariffs and removes all kinds of Non-Tariff Barriers (NTBs) and Sanitary and Phyto Sanitary (SPS) barriers which are undermining our negotiating leverage and position. "For Agriculture produce and products, Wagah route cannot be opened any further, until a separate bilateral agri-trade agreement is negotiated involving stakeholders including FAP, and is finalised and signed, based on an impartial and independent study for that purpose," he said.

Agriculture dependent population in India grew by 50%

WASHINGTON: Agricultural population of India grew by a whopping 50 per cent between 1980 and 2011, the highest for any country during this period, followed by China with 33 per cent, while that of the United States dropped by 37 per cent as a result of large scale mechanisation, a latest report has said. Between 1980 and 2011, the economically active agricultural populations of China and India grew by 33 and 50 per cent, respectively, due to overall population growth," the Worldwatch Institute said in its report yesterday. "The economically active agricultural population of the United States, on the other hand, declined by 37 per cent as a result of large-scale mechanisation, improved crop varieties, fertilisers, pesticides, and federal subsidies--all of which contributed to economies of scale and consolidation in US agriculture," it said.

Ottawa High board renews agriculture program

When Kevin Cleary, who has taught agriculture classes and led the Ottawa Township High School FFA Club for the past 20 years, announced he would be retiring at the end of the 2014 school year, it left some questions about the future of those programs.
The OTHS board answered that question — at least for now — when members approved the hiring of Sarah Timmons as the new agricultural teacher.

Board member Bill Byczynski said he originally was against extending the program's life until he discovered how many students were enrolled in the program for the upcoming school year, many of them freshmen.
"Last year, Intro to Ag had six students," he said. "Six kids that the teacher taught for the whole year in one class. This year, we have 21 in Intro to Ag, 12 of which are freshmen. As long as the numbers stay up, I'm OK with that, but financially for us, it's difficult to justify a teacher in a classroom for a handful of kids."
The compact meeting room was packed with FFA students, alumni and supporters, including Joe Schmidt, FFA alumni president.

When the board voted unanimously to hire the new teacher the crowd broke into applause.
Anna Schmidt, an OTHS senior who has been an ambassador for the FFA, said she was happy with the board's decision, but understands the necessity of keeping students in the agriculture programs to justify the expense.

NZ unis top 20 for agriculture, psychology

If you want to study civil engineering, psychology or agriculture, you're in luck: New Zealand is home to the 19th best university in the world for each of those subjects.
Canterbury University is the 19th best university worldwide for studying civil engineering, while Otago University scored the same ranking for psychology, according to QS World University Rankings.
Massey University also took out lucky number 19 for agriculture.
Overall, Auckland University is our best performing university, scoring a place in the top 50 for politics, law, education, psychology, linguistics, English, pharmacy and pharmacology, modern languages and biological sciences.

But New Zealand universities are falling behind in science, technology, engineering and maths, known as STEM subjects, as universities in Asia ramp up the competition.
"New Zealand's comparatively weak performance across the STEM disciplines shows the extent to which Asian investment is ramping up the global competition in this high-impact field," QS head of research Ben Sowter said.
Ten of the top 30 institutions for chemical, civil and electrical engineering are in Asia and National University of Singapore made the top 10 for all five of the engineering and technology disciplines.
Harvard remains the best all-round institution, ranking first globally in 11 of the 30 disciplines, two more than neighbouring rival, Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
