No Adverse Effects Noted after Mycoplasma Vaccination of Hens

US - Research by the USDA reveals no adverse effects following the vaccination of layers with an F-strain Mycoplasma gallisepticum vaccine on egg production or quality parameters.


The results of a new research in Mississippi suggest that hens can be safely vaccinated with Vectormune FP MG as pullets and can be re-vaccinated with a live Mycoplasma gallisepticum vaccine such as F-strain M. gallisepticum (FMG) at a later date without deleterious effects on egg production or egg or eggshell quality parameters.

Logistical Issues Hold Back West Bengali Egg Production

WEST BENGAL, INDIA - The state's new Minister for Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Affairs has called for West Bengal to increase egg production.


At a time when India is set to see an increase in egg production to about 95 billion by 2015, West Bengal, however, is unable to meet its increasing demand, according to The Statesman.


This has forced the state’s newly-assigned Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Minister, Swapan Debnath, to push for a sustained egg pool.

Modern Broilers Drink More Water

US - Increases in feed and water consumption do not seem be the only reason for the higher bodyweight gains of today's broilers than those 10 or 20 years ago, according to a new study.

A study was conducted to determine what differences exist in average daily water consumption and water-to-feed ratios for 2010–2011 flocks as compared with flocks reared 10 and 20 years ago at the University of Arkansas Applied Broiler Research Farm, reports C.L. Williams from the University of Arkansas.

Demand May Perk up Poultry Products

INDIA - With domestic demand rising, prices of poultry products may increase, while feed prices may continue to rule around current levels over the next few days, said trade experts.


Aditya Mishra, a commodity expert, told The Hindu Business Line that fresh buying in the market pushed poultry products up. Demand for feed and poultry products have improved and it may improve further in the coming days, he said.


To reap better margins, poultry farmers have been selling broilers after letting the broiler to become a little heavier, resulting in an increase in feed consumption, said trade sources.

Mixed Year for Russian Meat Sector

ANALYSIS - The Russian meat sector has a mixed and varied year in 2013, with low margins in the first half of the year because of record feed prices and low prices for the main types of meat and in the second half of the year, a rise in margins as feed prices reduced, writes Chris Harris.


According to the Russian market analysts, the Institute for Agricultural Market Studies, IKAR, the weakest part of the sector by the end of the year was the poultry sector, because oversupply and low prices forced values down to rock bottom.

ODISHA, INDIA - The Ministry of Agriculture has asked the State Government to prepare an action plan on poultry sector, focusing on improving the output from smaller backyard flocks.


With the Centre all set to unveil the National Livestock Mission (NLM), the Ministry of Agriculture has asked the State Government to prepare an action plan on poultry sector, reports New Indian Express.


In a letter to Chief Secretary J.K. Mohapatra, Joint Secretary in the Department of Animal Husbandry, Dairy and Fisheries in the Ministry of Agriculture, Sanjay Bhoosreddy, has requested to submit the State action plan for necessary financial support.
