Winter Crop Areas Up But Livestock Down

SCOTLAND, UK - A first look towards this year’s harvest shows an increase in winter crop areas but livestock numbers have continued to fall.


Scotland's Chief Statistician has released the latest results from the December Agricultural Survey.


The area of winter-sown crops in December 2013 was up 12 per cent on the previous December, with 20,000 hectares more wheat and a thousand hectares more oilseed rape and oats. The area of winter barley remained fairly similar to 2012, but most barley is sown in the spring. These increases bring the total winter crop area back to levels last seen in 2010.

Crop damage by unseasonal rains, hailstorm a serious issue

MUMBAI: The Bombay High Court today observed that unseasonal rains and hailstorms that wreaked havoc in several villages across Maharashtra since February this year was a serious issue. 


"It is a serious issue and needs to be looked into," a division bench of Chief Justice Mohit Shah and Justice M S Sanklecha said while hearing a public interest litigation filed by two agriculturists seeking financial aid of Rs 20,000 crores to all those farmers who have been affected by the hailstorm. 


The bench posted the PIL for hearing tomorrow. The PIL filed by Gorakh Gadke and Vithalrao Pawar sought a direction to the Union Government and state government to disburse immediate financial aid of Rs 20,000 crore despite the election code of conduct. 


Additional government pleader Milind More informed the court today that the government has declared a relief package of Rs 4000 crore to the farmers and they would be exempted from paying electricity bills for six months.

2014 Budget: Good News for Agriculture But Not Permanent

UK - The NFU says the Chancellor’s announcement to double the rate of the Annual Investment Allowance is welcome news for agriculture but it would have been better if George Osborne had made it a permanent fixture.

In his speech this week, Mr Osborne doubled the allowance to £500,000 and extended it until 2016 but the NFU says permanence would have helped the industry better plan for the future.

“Despite the reasonably good news on the investment allowance for plant and machinery, any incentives for capital infrastructure investment were sadly lacking in today’s budget. This is all the more frustrating given that few farming businesses are in a situation to benefit from the continued reductions in corporation tax. While the Chancellor talks about adding resilience and balance to the economy, farmers need to invest in capital items, and not just plant and machinery,” said NFU President Meurig Raymond.

AIC helping to modernise agriculture, boost yields

THE Agro Investment Corporation (AIC) has been living up to its mandate to modernise the country's agricultural and agribusiness base, boost employment in the sector and lay the groundwork for improved productivity for export and import substitution or replacement of a select range of crops.
