Prior to his appointment to the post of Minister of Agriculture, Engineer Ibrahim Mahmoud Hamid, held the position of the Minister of Interior. In fact, Hamid is an agricultural engineer with 14 years experience in the field, which qualifies him for the new post, especially the present economic conditions where many are looking at agriculture as a sole way out of the country's economic crisis and ensuring food security in addition to alleviating living conditions. Sudan Vision interviewed Hamid in which he spoke about his vision for improving and boosting agricultural production and promoting farming industries in Sudan.      

Genetically modified crops is like killing agriculture with acid: Ramadoss

Chennai (Madras), India: The Centre’s sanction to field trials for around 200 genetically modified (GM) food crops, including paddy and wheat, is equivalent to killing Indian agriculture with acid, PMK founder S. Ramadoss

He said the centre’s decision is an attack on federalism as agriculture and health are in the concurrent list of the Indian constitution. He also said the decision to allow field trials of GM crops has been taken without consulting the states.In a statement issued here, Ramadoss said the earlier two union ministers for environment – Jairam Ramesh and Jayanthi Natarajan – had opposed field trials of GM crops in India. He said a parliamentary standing committee on agriculture too had warned that GM crops would threaten health, seed sovereignty, food security and farm livelihood and an urgent decision on this subject should not be taken.

Pawar keen on regaining lost NCP bastions

PUNE: Union agriculture minister and NCP president Sharad Pawar has fielded some of his ace men for the Lok Sabha polls from the state to regain control of the sugar belt. Performing well here would help Pawar strengthen his post-election equations at the Centre.The NCP had lost five of the eight seats in the last Lok Sabha elections which weakened Pawar in Delhi, observers said. This time, the NCP has fielded candidates with 'elective merit'.In 2009, Sharad Pawar won Madha, Supriya Sulegot Baramati and Udayanraje Bhosale bagged the Satara seat. Sule and Bhosale will be fighting for a second term while Pawar has already entered Rajya Sabha.However, Bhosale has repeatedly criticized Pawar and his nephew Ajit Pawar and landed in sticky situations and dared the NCP leadership to take action against him. "Considering his hold on the Satara constituency, Pawar decided to ignore his nuisance value and renominate him. The NCP is sure to win this seat," said a senior NCP leader.

Farmers seek livelihood security from parties

AHMEDABAD: The Bharatiya Kisan Sangh (BKS) along with some NGOs, on Sunday, urged all political parties to include livelihood security for farmers in their election manifesto. Their representatives released a charter of demands for income and livelihood security for farmers at Gandhi Ashram here.Kapil Shah, Jatan Trust, said, "Elections are round the corner and this time the political parties should mention farmers' demand in their manifesto because 60 % people of India are directly connected to agri-business but no party ever thinks about this."Shah said, "Use of pesticides has affected our food crops and its quality. We demand that agriculture should be shifted towards ecological farming on a massive scale in a time bound manner."Devinder Sharma, an analyst of food policy, said, "Despite tall claims about green revolution and rhetoric about agricultural development, around 2,300 farmers have quit agriculture."

Research farm pioneer Al Black to be inducted into Agriculture Hall of Famer

Al Black, the former U.S. Department of Agriculture soil scientist who started the cooperative research farm in Mandan, is being inducted into the North Dakota Agriculture Hall of Fame.Black worked as a scientist for 40 years. He was the director of the Northern Great Plains Research Laboratory in Mandan from 1979-93.Black was the founder of the Area 4 SCD Cooperative Research Farm, which conducts farm field-size agricultural research. He was instrumental in recognizing the need for large scale research and private-public partnerships.Black died in July 2013 in Colorado. He is survived by his wife and two daughters and his brainchild, the research farm, is now in its 30th year of long-term research on dryland cropping systems.The farm south of Mandan is on land leased from the family of the late Roy Nelson. Income generated by the farm goes into a revolving fund used for payment of the lease, farming expenses and promotion.

Revolutionising Indian farming - with Israeli technology

Vertical farming, drip irrigation, soil solarisation and the like were terms that mystified Deepak Khatker, a 40-year-old farmer, when he first visited the Indo-Israel Centre of Excellence for Vegetables here a couple of years ago. Intrigued, he adopted the Israeli farming skills and, within months, saw production increase a staggering five-fold."We have traditionally grown wheat and barley in our fields but the techniques taught at the centre forced me to give vegetables a try," Khatker, a resident of Sheikhpura Khalsa village in Karnal district, about 100 km from the national capital, told IANS.Of the over seven hectares of land that Khatker owns, around three hectares are currently being used to cultivate vegetables using Israeli know-how.
