Alternative to Yogurt

Researchers at the Universitat Politècnica de València have obtained new products fermented with probiotic bacteria from grains and nuts -- what is known as plant-based or vegetable "milks" -- which are an alternative to conventional yogurts. The products are specially designed for people with allergies to cow's milk, lactose or gluten intolerance, as well as children and pregnant women.

From the laboratories at the Institute of Food Engineering for Development, the team has worked with almonds, oats and hazelnuts and soon will evaluate the use of walnuts and chestnuts as raw material for these new products. The Institute of Agrochemistry and Food Technology (IATA -CSIC) and the University College of Dublin (Ireland) have also taken part in the study.

An indigenous variety of brinjal popularised by a residential forum, ‘Niravu Vengeri,’ here has received a certificate of merit from the Kerala Agriculture University (KAU) for being relatively tasty, of high yield and above all suitable for backyard vegetable gardens.

According to a study conducted by P. Indira, Professor of Horticulture, Olericulture Department of KAU during 2013, this variety, now known as ‘Vengeri brinjal’ has an average length of 44 cm and 12.5 cm thickness. The brinjal plant, which is taller than other varieties, gave a yield of 1.75 kg on an average during the experiment. “The actual yield will be much higher considering the extended life span of the plant,” said Dr. Indira.

At $282/t, Swiss firm’s bid is highest for Indian wheat

Switzerland-based commodity trading Vitol Group placed the highest bid of $282.62 a tonne for wheat offered for exports by State Trading Corporation (STC) from Mundra Port in the latest tender.

Louis Dreyfus Commodities was the second highest bidder at $280.62. STC, which offered to sell 1.6 lakh tonnes, received seven bids.
These bids were higher than the floor price for exports of $260.
The Government had reduced the floor price for exports from $300 to $260 on October 30 to boost shipments.

PM's youth award winner continues to blaze trail in agriculture

THE 2010 recipient of the prestigious Prime Minister's Youth Award for Excellence in Agriculture, Nicholas Powell, continues to blaze a trail in the sector.

In addition to acquiring a green house, Powell, who hails from Mount Pleasant in Manchester, manages several others, and has increased his acreage to produce yam, sweet potato and cocoa.

The 27-year-old farmer has been involved in the sector from an early age and has won several other awards, including the Jamaica Agricultural Society's National Young Champion Farmer for three consecutive years -- 2010 to 2012 -- and the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture Award in 2012.

Snow cover in US insulates wheat crop

LONDON: US crops are escaping record-setting cold weather with little damage. 

Snow cover helped insulate wheat plants, according to DTN/Progressive Farmer. "The worst of it has gone by, especially in the Midwest," Claudio Oliveira, the head of trading at Castlestone Management in New York, said. "I do expect grain prices to come off now." Temperatures as low as minus 10 degrees Fahrenheit probably caused "little significant damage to wheat crops" from southern Illinois to Ohio overnight, Joel Burgio, senior agricultural meteorologist for DTN/Progressive Farmer, said on Wednesday. "It's highly unlikely that widespread damage occurred because of the snow cover," Dave Marshall, a farm marketing adviser for Toay Commodity Futures Group, said. "Wheat is a hardy plant, and this year's crop had good growth before entering dormancy to withstand the cold weather better". ......

State Trading Corporation gets many takers for government wheat tender

NEW DELHI: The State Trading Corporation of India (STC), which has been exporting wheat from government warehouses, has received a good response to a tender floated for the export of 1.60 lakh tonne of wheat. It received the highest bid at $282.62 a tonne for its wheat -- more than the government's floor price of $260 a tonne. Three more tenders for the export of 7.4 lakh tonne of wheat will be opened on January 10, 14 and 23. 

According to government officials, STC which had come up with tenders to offload 1,60,000 tonne wheat from Mundra port in Gujarat got the highest bid from Swiss-based, Dutch-owned multinational energy and commodity trading company Vitol which quoted $282.62 a tonne to export 50,000 tonne wheat. 

More than 7 bidders participated for the global tender including Louis Dreyfus, Emmsons, Al Ghurair, Glencore, Concordia and Vitol. Demand for Indian wheat is coming from West Asia and South East Asian countries according to traders.

Export buying lends flavour to cardamom

Cardamom prices increased marginally on good export buying at auctions held last week.

However, availability of export variety was limited as the size of the cardamom has fallen due to excess bearing of capsules in the pinnacles. Added to this, the change in weather conditions during the flowering and fruit setting stages have affected the crop, growers in Idukki said.

Exporters covered actively. They bought around 70 tonnes as they seemed to have good orders on hand, market sources told Business Line.

Cotton crop pegged at 361 lakh bales for 2013-14 season

The Indian Cotton Federation has estimated the cotton crop for the 2013-14 season at 361 lakh bales.
The crop, though delayed by a month is good, qualitywise, said J. Thulasidharan, President, ICF.The Federation is expecting arrivals to pick up and prices to ease after Sankaranthi.
ICF's statewise survey of the crop shows that Gujarat tops in production (125 lakh bales) followed by Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh at 70 and 65 lakh bales respectively.The production in the central zone comprising Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan has been estimated at 55 lakh bales.Karnataka and Madhya Pradesh account for 18 lakh bales each.
