Punjab announces 80% subsidy for sugarcane drip irrigation

CHANDIGARH: One key takeaway for farmers from the agriculture summit was the technique of drip irrigation for sugarcane, which not only helps conserve water and energy, but also tackles the spread of fertilizer residues. The successful example of a progressive farmer from Indore, Rakesh Upadhyaya, was so inspiring that the state government immediately decided to give 80% subsidy for the drip irrigation equipment.

"This technique can be very effective even in areas where there is no water scarcity. It uses direct, slow and frequent watering through point or line source emitters on or below the soil surface with partial wetting of the soil surface. The practice of water logging the entire field results in criminal wastage," Upadhyaya told TOI.

He claimed that sugarcane yield too goes up with drip irrigation. "If farmers in Punjab are today growing 30 tonnes per acre of sugarcane, they can expect to reap double the quantity by adopting this technique," he said.

Upadhyaya learned of the relatively new method during his visit to Israel two years ago. "It takes an investment of Rs 40,000 per acre and many farmers are now using it with better results," he said.

India's wheat, rice and corn exports may fall 29% in 2014-15

NEW DELHI: India's exports of wheat, rice and corn are expected to drop sharply by 29 per cent to 13.5 million tonnes in the 2014-15 marketing year due to sluggish global prices, according to a USDA report. 

The combined shipments of wheat, rice and corn from India are estimated to touch 19 million tonnes in the ongoing 2013-14 marketing year, it said. 

The marketing year for wheat runs from April to March; for rice, from October to September and for corn, from November to October. 

"Exports of wheat, rice and corn during the 2014-15 marketing year are forecast down from the year prior, due to softening global prices," the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) said in its latest report.

Youth have to take up agriculture: CM Siddaramaiah

Chief minister Siddaramaiah said the department of agriculture should encourage the rural youth take up the profession by making it more attractive, thereby for more and more youth from rural areas who have been migrating to cities.

Speaking at an award presentation organised at the banquet hall of Vidhana Soudha, the chief minister said around 50% of youth from rural areas have been migrating to cities for a livelihood as they consider agriculture is not viable for them.

"The need of the hour is that research in agriculture has to reach farmers in rural areas," the chief minister said.

Eating pulses could keep India healthier: Expert

PANAJI: Consuming more pulses and fewer carbohydrates from cereals like rice and wheat could help slacken India's growing epidemic of non-communicable diseases, said Gordon Bacon, CEO of 'Pulse Canada', an association that represents Canada's pulses industry .

Speaking at the inauguration of the Pulses Conclave 2014, Bacon compared India's dietary patterns from 1988 to 2008. Quoting food policy research institute figures, Bacon said, "India's consumption of pulses has gone down by over 30% when compared to 20 years ago; but the consumption of oil has gone up by around 60%, as has the consumption of fish, milk and eggs. The changing diet when combined with sedentary lifestyle is a double whammy, especially at a time when more women in India are taking up full-time jobs, meaning less time and thought is going into preparing food," he said. "WHO projects that by 2030, non-communicable ailments like cardio vascular diseases, diabetes and hypertension in India will grow by 95%," he added. He stated that the nutrition derived from pulses, in the form of proteins, fibre, vitamins, minerals and complex carbohydrates could help control blood sugar, achieve weight-loss and enhance cardio-vascular health.

10 MoUs involving Rs 2,600 crore investment signed

Farmers pay price of contaminated Ponda nullah

PONDA: The contamination of Ponda nullah has hit about two hundred farmers, including 180 from Kapileshwari-Kavlem in Bandora village panchayat while about 20 from Ponda Municipal Council (PMC) areas.

Kavlem sarpanch Rajesh Kawlekar claimed that the contamination of the nullah has forced farmers to give up agricultural activity in the area for the last two years.

"Farmers used to cultivate over five tonnes of rice in their 1,10,000 sq m of farm land at Kapileshwari and the sweet water from the main Ponda nullah was used to irrigate the crop. The contamination of the nullah has resulted farmers giving up agriculture," Kawlekar said.

He also added that the village panchayat has already compensated farmers with 5,000 each, but that was too less an amount. Giving up farming has resulted in an immense loss to farmers, Kawlekar said.

"For India, a strong, prosperous and economically independent Afghanistan is a strategic priority and a key element of our Strategic Partnership Agreement," said Khurshid, who returned last night from Kandahar after inaugurating the Afghan National Agricultural Sciences and Technology University (ANASTU) in the sprawling Tarnak farm.

"We, therefore, see our participation in this Agriculture University project as an important activity of the India- Afghanistan strategic partnership," he said.

Badal forms panel to improve farmers' economic conditions

Mohali: Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal on Wednesday set up a panel to suggest measures for improving economic conditions of farmers.

Addressing the agriculture summit here, the Chief Minister said the committee headed by the Chairman Punjab State Farmers' Commission Dr G S Kalkat, would comprise agriculture scientists, experts, economists and progressive farmers.

The panel would finalise a time bound action plan to bail out "beleaguered" peasantry from the present crisis, he said.

"Due to the shrinking of current land holdings, rising cost of the agriculture inputs coupled with the non remunerative MSP and the apathetic attitude of the centre, agriculture was no longer a profitable venture and was passing through a severe crisis," Badal said.

Badal sticks to free power to farmers

On the concluding day of the four-day agriculture summit on Wednesday, Punjab chief minister Parkash Singh Badal made it clear that he would not review his decision of giving free power to agriculture sector even if experts were advising him to do so. Addressing a gathering, Badal said, "Experts may be talking with their experience but I talk with political experience, and I will not withdraw the facility from farmers till I am here (chief minister)."
