Inland saline aquaculture scope in Malwa

CHANDIGARH: The waterlogged areas of Malwa region of Punjab will be explored for inland saline aquaculture, especially with W S Lakra, director and vice-chancellor of Central Institute of Fisheries Education advocating it at the Progressive Punjab Agriculture Summit.

Lakra said Punjab's.09 million hectare of salt affected area has tremendous scope for inland aquaculture. "This land is unfit for sustainable agriculture crop besides surface-drainage system was uneconomic," he said.

"Culture of milk fish is being promoted as it has tolerance to variable salinities. He said the target of 3750 kg per hectare production per year has been achieved with culture of grey mullet touching 1320kg/per hectare/4 month production," he added. .

Canada can help boost Punjab's farm economy

Canadian minister of agriculture Lyle Eldon Stewart emphasised the need for joint initiatives in the area of food processing technology, piggery, dairy genetics and canola farming to give a big impetus to agricultural economy of Punjab besides encouraging farmers on the sound parameters of agricultural diversification.

Stewart, who also conducted the session, was speaking at the fifth session on the third day of the Progressive Punjab Agricultural Summit.

Experts said Punjab could follow canola cultivation in the state in a big way on the pattern of Canada.

Focusing on food processing technology, Robin Young, India project manager, Manitoba Food Development Centre, said commercialisation of conventional and functional food products was the only answer to the economic crisis being faced by the farm sector of Punjab.

Canadian province keen on collaboration in grain storage, food security tech

CHANDIGARH: Canadian Global Water Security Institute in Saskatoon will transfer water treatment technologies to tackle the chronic problem of brackish water besides water-logging in southern Punjab. This was announced by agriculture minister of Saskatchewan (Canada) Lyle Stewart on the third day of Progressive Punjab Agricultural Summit at Chappar Chiri.

Leading a delegation of agriculture experts, Stewart said collaboration with Punjab in grain storage, technologies in food security, bio-sciences will be explored. He met with CM Prakash Singh Badal and said there was a need to take to the farmer exchange program forward. He extended an invitation to Punjab delegation for a Farm Show to be held in June this year.

Punjab's mustard oil to take over Canada's kanola oil

Punjab's mustard oil would beat rapeseed oil (commonly called kanola oil), currently imported from Canada in huge quantities and used as edible oil.

The Centre for Genetic Manipulations of Crop Plants, University of Delhi, has developed a variety of mustard which is healthier than kanola oil.

Centre director Dr Deepak Pental said the university had developed a variety by genetically modifying mustard seed and the modified variety had a high omega-13 content. Dr Pental was part of discussions on biotechnology in agriculture on the second day of the four-day agriculture summit.

He spoke on the topic, 'Genetic Modification in Crops, Its Costs and Benefits'. He said the centre these days was working on improving the yield of the variety.

Farmers’ concerns over Indian access to local market

As Pakistan appears to be inching close to granting a non-discriminatory market access — the Most Favoured Nation status to India — farmers are fearful of the consequences.

Although they are now part of the negotiation process, through a Task Force on Agriculture under Pakistan-India Joint Business Forum (BIJBF), they do not feel comfortable with any premature decision.

Last week, Co-chairman of Task Force Tariq Bucha, who also heads the Farmers Associates Pakistan (FAP), summed up farmers worry, saying both proposals on the table right now are not beneficial for local farmers. One of them, being pursued by Pakistan, is extending operational time of the Wagha border entry to 24 hours to help clear consignments quickly. Second, which came from India, asks Pakistan to progressively abolish sensitive list (of about 936 items) in next five year. The Indian side promises to reciprocate (for about 102 items) in shorter time of 18 months.

Schemes to promote community farming announced in budget

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The district panchayat will chalk out a massive project to conserve the Vellayani lake. District panchayat vice-president Rufus Daniel made this announcement while presenting the panchayat budget for the fiscal 2014-15 here on Tuesday. 

The panchayat has envisaged a project worth Rs 26 crore for conservation of Vellayani lake, which will be implemented with assistance from ministry of environment and climate change. This project will be initiated in addition to the ongoing project, which is being carried out at a cost of Rs 49.5 lakh. 

The panchayat has been undertaking a slew of measures like construction of organic bunds, promotion of farming in areas adjacent to Vellayani Lake and levelling of craters developed in various parts of the lake owing to sand mining. "Water conservation is one of the priority areas of the panchayat. We have been successfully carrying out projects to save Vellayani lake, which acts as reservoir for five major drinking water projects," Daniel said.

Agricultural research gets gender transformation approach

HYDERABAD: Empowering women smallholder farmers overcome the unique hurdles they face in the semi-arid tropics, and thus securing the future of food production and the economic growth in Asia and sub-Saharan Africa, was among the key messages at the Asia Regional Planning Meeting of the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT). 

The meeting held at the ICRISAT headquarters in Hyderabad, acknowledged the significant contributions made by women smallholder farmers and the transformative role they play in dryland agriculture. "The efforts of ingenious and resourceful women smallholder farmers are helping us in our mission to achieve prosperous, food-secure and resilient dryland tropics. They have always been at the forefront in fighting poverty, hunger, malnutrition and environmental degradation. It is upon us to work with and provide them with scientific innovations and solutions to help increase the productivity of their crops and their incomes, while improving the resilience of their lands and livelihoods," ICRISAT Director General Dr William D Dar said. 

"ICRISAT now adopts a gender transformative approach in all its research for development activities in Asia and sub-Saharan Africa. Our interdisciplinary teams of scientists, with guidance from gender specialists, will methodically assess the women smallholder farmers' control over resources and explore more opportunities for value addition to their services. Our aim is to achieve real gender equality and thereby significantly help empower women," Dr Dar added.
