China closes poultry markets

NANJING, Jan. 31 (Xinhua) -- Another human H7N9 case has been found in east China's Jiangsu Province, the provincial health department confirmed on Friday.


The patient, a 75-year-old woman from the provincial capital of Nanjing, is in a critical condition.


The new case brings the number of infections in the province to eight this year.


H7N9 has killed 19 in China this year, and the total number of human infections had reached 96 on Monday, according to the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention.


With bird flu cases increasing on a daily basis, public concern over people-to-people transmission of the disease during Spring Festival is growing.

Organic baby corn yield fruitful for this farmer

Cultivation of organic baby corn, a cereal grain from maize, has yielded the desired results to a farmer at Puthiyamputhur.Having raised the crop on two acres, M. Velraj, the baby corn farmer, said the cultivation had ensured him livelihood support. Since less amount of water was required to raise the short duration crop, farmers need not rely wholly on rains. It was harvested in just a span of 50 to 60 days after sowing. Baby corn harvesting could be done early while the ears were small and immature.He said, “the baby corn ears are hand-picked as soon as corn silks emerge from the ear tips.Normally, corn matures very quickly; hence harvest has to be timed carefully. Baby corn has nutritional value and it is sweet. It is consumed both raw and cooked.”

Paddy harvest on 50,000 acres in Cuddalore district affected

Samba paddy crop in over 50,000 acres in Cuddalore district has not been harvested yet owing to acute shortage of labourers and non-availability of harvest machines.Crops that are otherwise ready for harvest well before Pongal festival are now withering in fields and if action is not taken on a war-footing, it would inflict heavy losses, say farmers. Paddy ought to be harvested within 15 days of maturity and if left exposed to the elements in the farms hulling would become difficult as the grains would fall off the stalks, resulting in much lower yield.Vice-president of the Cauvery Delta Farmers’ Association K.V. Kannan told The Hindu that it was impossible to find labourers to harvest ripe paddy crop. Harvesting ought to be done within the next 10 days and it would require either 10,000 labourers or 700 harvest machines.

ICRISAT scientists identify climate change-ready chickpea germplasm

In a major boost to climate change-ready crops research, the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT) has identified 40 germplasm lines of chickpea with resistance to extreme weather conditions such as drought, high temperature and salinity.Six germplasm lines of chickpea were found to have resistance for both extreme weather and for pests and diseases. The institute screened 211 lines for attributes such as high yield and drought tolerance and zeroed in on 40 lines. This research had a spin-off effect. The institute’s Genebank scientists team could identify 31 lines with resistance to pests and diseases.The latest findings are the result of a 14-year effort by the team led by Hari D Upadhyaya, Head of Genebank at ICRISAT.

TNAU gives Australian students peek into village life, farming practices

The Tamil Nadu Agricultural University took a team of 15 Australian students from La Trobe University on a field visit to some farms near Pollachi to help them understand village life and farming practices.The team comprised students undergoing their Bachelor's programme in Agriculture and Animal Husbandry.
