A prized catch at Rs.10 crore, the five and-half- year-old bull is attracting visitors from far and wide. That he weighs 12 quintals and is 11.5 ft long and 5.8 feet tall and is a recipient of cash prizes worth Rs.18 lakh at various cattle festivals is only adding to his fame.

His Kapurthala-based owner Santokh Somal said, "Raju is very dear to me; I have reared him like a child. People have offered me Rs.10 crore for him but I did not sell him. I will never sell him. He is priceless.

Schemes to promote community farming announced in budget

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The district panchayat will chalk out a massive project to conserve the Vellayani lake. District panchayat vice-president Rufus Daniel made this announcement while presenting the panchayat budget for the fiscal 2014-15 here on Tuesday. 

The panchayat has envisaged a project worth Rs 26 crore for conservation of Vellayani lake, which will be implemented with assistance from ministry of environment and climate change. This project will be initiated in addition to the ongoing project, which is being carried out at a cost of Rs 49.5 lakh. 

The panchayat has been undertaking a slew of measures like construction of organic bunds, promotion of farming in areas adjacent to Vellayani Lake and levelling of craters developed in various parts of the lake owing to sand mining. "Water conservation is one of the priority areas of the panchayat. We have been successfully carrying out projects to save Vellayani lake, which acts as reservoir for five major drinking water projects," Daniel said.

Agricultural research gets gender transformation approach

HYDERABAD: Empowering women smallholder farmers overcome the unique hurdles they face in the semi-arid tropics, and thus securing the future of food production and the economic growth in Asia and sub-Saharan Africa, was among the key messages at the Asia Regional Planning Meeting of the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT). 

The meeting held at the ICRISAT headquarters in Hyderabad, acknowledged the significant contributions made by women smallholder farmers and the transformative role they play in dryland agriculture. "The efforts of ingenious and resourceful women smallholder farmers are helping us in our mission to achieve prosperous, food-secure and resilient dryland tropics. They have always been at the forefront in fighting poverty, hunger, malnutrition and environmental degradation. It is upon us to work with and provide them with scientific innovations and solutions to help increase the productivity of their crops and their incomes, while improving the resilience of their lands and livelihoods," ICRISAT Director General Dr William D Dar said. 

"ICRISAT now adopts a gender transformative approach in all its research for development activities in Asia and sub-Saharan Africa. Our interdisciplinary teams of scientists, with guidance from gender specialists, will methodically assess the women smallholder farmers' control over resources and explore more opportunities for value addition to their services. Our aim is to achieve real gender equality and thereby significantly help empower women," Dr Dar added.
