Inland saline aquaculture scope in Malwa

CHANDIGARH: The waterlogged areas of Malwa region of Punjab will be explored for inland saline aquaculture, especially with W S Lakra, director and vice-chancellor of Central Institute of Fisheries Education advocating it at the Progressive Punjab Agriculture Summit.

Lakra said Punjab's.09 million hectare of salt affected area has tremendous scope for inland aquaculture. "This land is unfit for sustainable agriculture crop besides surface-drainage system was uneconomic," he said.

"Culture of milk fish is being promoted as it has tolerance to variable salinities. He said the target of 3750 kg per hectare production per year has been achieved with culture of grey mullet touching 1320kg/per hectare/4 month production," he added. .

Canada can help boost Punjab's farm economy

Canadian minister of agriculture Lyle Eldon Stewart emphasised the need for joint initiatives in the area of food processing technology, piggery, dairy genetics and canola farming to give a big impetus to agricultural economy of Punjab besides encouraging farmers on the sound parameters of agricultural diversification.

Stewart, who also conducted the session, was speaking at the fifth session on the third day of the Progressive Punjab Agricultural Summit.

Experts said Punjab could follow canola cultivation in the state in a big way on the pattern of Canada.

Focusing on food processing technology, Robin Young, India project manager, Manitoba Food Development Centre, said commercialisation of conventional and functional food products was the only answer to the economic crisis being faced by the farm sector of Punjab.

Canadian province keen on collaboration in grain storage, food security tech

CHANDIGARH: Canadian Global Water Security Institute in Saskatoon will transfer water treatment technologies to tackle the chronic problem of brackish water besides water-logging in southern Punjab. This was announced by agriculture minister of Saskatchewan (Canada) Lyle Stewart on the third day of Progressive Punjab Agricultural Summit at Chappar Chiri.

Leading a delegation of agriculture experts, Stewart said collaboration with Punjab in grain storage, technologies in food security, bio-sciences will be explored. He met with CM Prakash Singh Badal and said there was a need to take to the farmer exchange program forward. He extended an invitation to Punjab delegation for a Farm Show to be held in June this year.
