Hailstorms hit Maharashtra farmers where it hurts

PUNE: Parts of the arid state of Maharashtra and most of central India now look like the hill stations in the Himalayas thanks to the unusual hailstorm in this part from the past one week. The size, spacial spread, intensity and cause of the hailstorm are all unusual both for the farmers as well as the meteorologists, who say a respite from hailstorms won't come till March 13. 


The rains has damaged crops on 6.72 lakh hectare in Maharashtra. Even as the state agricultural department is assessing the damage, horticulture cash crops like grapes, pomegranates and oranges have been affected the most. 

Untimely rain spells bad news for rabi crops

NEW DELHI: Untimely rain, which hit many parts of the country in the past 48 hours, may affect the overall yield of wheat in north India and other Rabi crops in Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra if it continues for a longer period. Though farmers in Maharashtra have already reported damage to standing crops, including pulses and oilseeds, and grapes, the situation is not as alarming in Punjab, Haryana and western Uttar Pradesh. "The situation is not alarming right now in north India. But if rains along with high wind speed persist for a longer period this month, it may affect the standing crops including wheat," said KV Prabhu, joint director of Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI).

India’s earnings from IT, agriculture from Africa may reach $160 billion by 2025

NEW DELHI: India's revenue from Africa can potentially grow four-fold to $160 billion by 2025 through greater presence in sectors such as IT, agriculture, infrastructure, pharmaceuticals and consumer goods, according to a McKinsey report released Monday. India can aspire to capture almost 7% of the IT services market, 5% of the FMCG space, 10% of the power sector, and 2-5% of the agri-allied services business in Africa, said the report -- "Joining Hands to Unlock Africa's Potential A New Indian Industry-led Approach to Africa" "We believe India's strengths and experience of operating in similar capital constrained conditions will be of great value to Africa. Africa needs constructive foreign investment and holds the promise of long-term business for India," said Noel Tata, chairman of CII's Africa Committee, while releasing the report.
