PUNE: When the weathermen come out with the forecast of Indian
Monsoon for 2014 in April, they will use the country's most-powerful
computing system of 790 TF installed at the Indian Institute of Tropical
Meteorology (IITM), Pune. And the government has already set aside
Rs550 crore for the weather scientists to begin work on 10 Peta Flop
computer.
Indian weather research establishment in the country is currently working on developing its own model for weather forecast.
India has borrowed the ocean-coupled atmospheric model from the United States to predict Indian monsoon on an experimental basis. The Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES) is implementing a monsoon mission to thoroughly indegenise the US model for Indian conditions and make it an Indian model by 2017.
